1 INTRODUCTION Fungi play a crucial role in Earth's ecosystems due to their function and prevalence. As decomposers, they break down organic matter, thereby providing nutrients to their surroundings and controlling the structure of the soil. Recent studies on species richness have estimated the number of existing fungal species to be somewhere between 2 to 6 million (Baldrian et al., 2021; Hawksworth & Lücking, 2017; Niskanen et al., 2023). Hence, fungi comprise one of the largest kingdoms of life.
