What does it mean to be a journalist?
To be a journalist is to be a reliable presence.
Who do you wish followed you?
Oprah, Beyonce, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Jay-Z, Gayle King, and Rhianna!
Why did you become a journalist?
My journey as a writer began as a poet in the third grade. And, as a journalist who has been on the frontlines of protests and in the newsroom, I’ve learned to SEE people the same ways I longed to be seen as a Black child who grew up in the least touristy areas of San Francisco and Oakland in between hard times, poverty, and violence when journalists with camera crews arrived in my neighborhood.
At my core as a journalist is amplifying the voices of black and marginalized people, justice, and equity.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
My masters project on faith, justice, and activism in Harlem.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't let anyone tell you that what your passionate about as a storyteller isn't important. Someone needs to hear from you.
