It was a busy and vibrant place in the early 1980s and we never failed to get a big crowd gathered around on Friday night. Back then, shops closed at 5.30 p.m. most nights but on Friday nights you could shop until 9 p.m. It all began with one of our Friday trips into town from Huia for supplies and a catchup with our mates. We did our grocery shopping and then realised we didn’t have enough petrol for the ride home later in the evening – or enough money to buy any.
