In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book. Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Roxane Gay, and many others. The essays in Lynette D’Amico’s Men I Hate are powerful individually, but taken together profoundly define life both individual and universal.
It’s a particularly important time to read about queer and trans love and my recently published Men I Hate is a book that was written somewhat in conversation and debate with my husband’s book, Becoming a Man. Here, we wanted to try interviewing one another. Although Carl thought he was doing the best he could to prepare me for his gender transition, he didn’t know what he didn’t know. We had been together 20 years as a lesbian couple before Carl transitioned.
Photo: Erich Mielke's Office by the Stasi Museum, via Wikimedia Commons. All the dogs in Berlin had the same face. A wiry, bearded face with intelligent eyes and perked ears. None of the dogs paid me the slightest bit of attention even though I was so dog hungry, missing our Labradoodle and yellow Lab back home in Boston. The German dogs trotted with purpose and never veered from the path to chase a duck or leap into the water or bark to say hi or keep away.
