Arrests and Mental Health
“According to a study conducted by researchers at the National Library of Medicine, individuals with any psychiatric disorder were associated with a four to five times higher risk of committing crimes.” No doubt, the rate is higher for those with an untreated psychiatric disorder.

No on Prop. 36 By Lynne Gibbs, S.B. Sat Oct 19, 2024 | 9:26am Add to Favorites As the op-ed “Proposition 36 is a backward mass incarceration plan that solves nothing” in the San José Spotlight said: “Proposition 36 is literally a proposal to go backward. Support Senate Bill 43
As a member of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and an active mental health advocate, I hear from family members whose loved ones with serious illness are at large at high risk in the community. A Multimillion-Dollar Fine Means It's the Right Time to Act
Santa Barbara County is soon to be hit with a multimillion-dollar fine! We can and urgently must make lemonade out of this lemon! The fine is being imposed upon the county by the Department of State Hospitals (DSH) as we are one of the state’s worst offenders — in the top 15 of 58 counties — in the percentage growth of mentally ill IST, or incompetent to stand trial, felony offenders in our jail. A person is deemed incompetent to stand trial by a judge in conference with two psychiatrists.
The Santa Barbara Independent
Nick Welsh’s article “Santa Barbara County to Be Fined $6 Million for Too Many ‘Canaries in Coal Mine’” notes the concerning growth of those who are incompetent-to-stand-trial [IST] languishing in the Santa Barbara County jail while their mental health continues to deteriorate. But the article fails to draw the clear connection between this crisis and the severe shortage of community-based treatment beds in the county. Until we address this bed crisis, the IST crisis is bound to continue to grow.

Letter to the editor: Council members should represent their constituents - Dyersville Commercial: Opinion
Posted: Wednesday, December 30, 2015 5:00 am Letter to the editor: Council members should represent their constituents Roger and Lynne Gibbs Dyersville dyersvillecommercial.com | 0 comments We just came from the Dec. 21 Dyersville City Council meeting.
