Relativistic ultrafast electron diffraction at high repetition rates
Topics Laser materials, Second harmonic generation, Electron sources, Ultrafast electron diffraction, Photocathodes, Gas jet, Gas phase, Electron scattering Development of pulsed electron sources has revolutionized the field of structural dynamics leading to a new paradigm in the investigation of ultrafast phenomena. To this end, diffraction techniques have taken a center stage for providing atomic-level structural information in gas and condensed phase systems.
Rehybridization dynamics into the pericyclic minimum of an electrocyclic reaction imaged in real-time - Nature Communications
Abstract Electrocyclic reactions are characterized by the concerted formation and cleavage of both σ and π bonds through a cyclic structure. This structure is known as a pericyclic transition state for thermal reactions and a pericyclic minimum in the excited state for photochemical reactions. However, the structure of the pericyclic geometry has yet to be observed experimentally.
Ultrafast electron diffraction: Visualizing dynamic states of matter
Abstract Since the discovery of electron-wave duality, electron scattering instrumentation has developed into a powerful array of techniques for revealing the atomic structure of matter. Beyond detecting local lattice variations in equilibrium structures with the highest possible spatial resolution, recent research efforts have been directed toward the long-sought-after dream of visualizing the dynamic evolution of matter in real time.
Photodissociation of aqueous I 3 − observed with liquid-phase ultrafast mega-electron-volt electron diffraction
We have tracked the structural dynamics of I 3 − during photodissociation using optical pump-MeV electron probe experiments which are fully described in the Methods section. Briefly, a sub-200 nm sheet jet of aqueous I 3 − solution (prepared from 130 mM I2 and excess KI) was pumped with a 400 nm optical laser pulse to initiate photodissociation, and the scattered 3.7 MeV electron beam probe was detected downstream.
Liquid-phase mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction
Abstract The conversion of light into usable chemical and mechanical energy is pivotal to several biological and chemical processes, many of which occur in solution. To understand the structure–function relationships mediating these processes, a technique with high spatial and temporal resolutions is required. Here, we report on the design and commissioning of a liquid-phase mega-electron-volt (MeV) ultrafast electron diffraction instrument for the study of structural dynamics in solution.
The photochemical ring-opening of 1,3-cyclohexadiene imaged by ultrafast electron diffraction
Abstract The ultrafast photoinduced ring-opening of 1,3-cyclohexadiene constitutes a textbook example of electrocyclic reactions in organic chemistry and a model for photobiological reactions in vitamin D synthesis. Although the relaxation from the photoexcited electronic state during the ring-opening has been investigated in numerous studies, the accompanying changes in atomic distance have not been resolved.
