Impact of saturated fat absorption on serum low density lipoprotein-cholesterol response to the replacement of saturated with unsaturated fats in healthy males. The ‘Reading, Imperial, Surrey, Saturated fat Cholesterol Intervention-2 (RISSCI-2)’ non-rando

Isolating the acute metabolic effects of carbohydrate restriction on postprandial metabolism with or without energy restriction: a crossover study - European Journal of Nutrition
Abstract Low-carbohydrate diets and intermittent energy restriction may offer metabolic advantages in fuel utilisation, that are independent of weight loss. The underlying mechanisms for these effects are unclear but may involve extensions of the catabolic phase and/or attenuation of insulin secretion. To address this gap, we aimed to investigate the independent acute metabolic effect of carbohydrate restriction at varying energy levels.
Do high-protein diets have the potential to reduce gut barrier function in a sex-dependent manner? - European Journal of Nutrition
Abstract Impaired gut barrier function is associated with systemic inflammation and many chronic diseases. Undigested dietary proteins are fermented in the colon by the gut microbiota which produces nitrogenous metabolites shown to reduce barrier function in vitro. With growing evidence of sex-based differences in gut microbiotas, we determined whether there were sex by dietary protein interactions which could differentially impact barrier function via microbiota modification.
Impact of a food-based dietary fat exchange model for replacing dietary saturated with unsaturated fatty acids in healthy men on plasma phospholipids fatty acid profiles and dietary patterns - European Journal of Nutrition
Abstract Purpose UK guidelines recommend dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) should not exceed 10% total energy (%TE) for cardiovascular disease prevention, with benefits observed when SFAs are replaced with unsaturated fatty acids (UFAs).
Pediatric Emergency Care
Objectives Deaths due to prescription opioid overdoses are at record-high levels. Limiting the amount of opioid prescribed has been suggested as a prevention strategy. The purpose of this study was to describe the opioid prescribing practices in the emergency departments and urgent care sites of a Midwestern tertiary care children’s hospital system.
The Woodrat Gut Microbiota as an Experimental System for Understanding Microbial Metabolism of Dietary Toxins
The microbial communities inhabiting the alimentary tracts of mammals, particularly those of herbivores, are estimated to be one of the densest microbial reservoirs on Earth. The significance of these gut microbes in influencing the physiology, ecology and evolution of their hosts is only beginning to be realized.
Experimental Evolution on a Wild Mammal Species Results in Modifications of Gut Microbial Communities
Comparative studies have shown that diet, life history, and phylogeny interact to determine microbial community structure across mammalian hosts. However, these studies are often confounded by numerous factors. Selection experiments offer unique opportunities to validate conclusions and test hypotheses generated by comparative studies.
