Table Food and Dogs
Do you treat your dog table food? There are several reasons why this might not be a healthy choice for your pet. First off, your pet's digestive system may not be accustomed to eating the variety of foods that we do, and this can result in digestive upset with vomiting and diarrhea. Secondly, foods that are higher in fat may put your pet at risk for pancreatitis - a condition which can also cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, and dehydration - and an emergency trip to your veterinarian.
Traveling with a Pet
Are you travelling with a pet this summer? There are a few things you should prepare for in advance. If you're driving, check out hotel sites to see which are pet-friendly and which aren't. If you're flying with your pet, contact your veterinarian in advance to schedule an appointment for a health certificate, and other paperwork which may be needed if your pet is going to travel in cargo vs. in cabin.
Acute Allergic Reactions
Did you know? Dogs can have acute anaphylactic reactions just like people. We most often see these types of reactions in dogs during warmer months when dogs are spending more time outdoors and coming into contact with biting insects. Symptoms of allergic reactions in dogs can include facial swelling, vomiting and diarrhea, and weakness/collapse. If your pet develops any of these symptoms you should seek emergency veterinary attention.
Storm/Noise Phobias in Dogs
Does your pet suffer from extreme anxiety during spring and summer storms or fireworks? Symptoms of anxiety can include pacing, heavy panting, shaking, hiding, and destructive behaviors. The good news is that there are several ways you can help ease your pet's anxiety during these events. Thundershirts are one option; these are vests that help calm your dog in many different situations that can cause anxiety. Natural supplements for anxiety such as valerian root are also helpful for some dogs.
