M-V-Pete? Crow-Armstrong adds to his case with 4-hit night - including a HR - in Chicago Cubs' 11-0 rout.
PITTSBURGH - The M-V-P chants started among Chicago Cubs fans behind the visitors dugout as Pete Crow-Armstrong crossed the plate. Crow-Armstrong had just lasered a two-run home run into the right-field seats during the seventh inning Saturday night to cap a four-hit night in the Cubs’ dominant 11-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Left-hander Shota Imanaga didn’t give the Pirates any chance to come back by throwing six shutout innings.
How a new changeup and an extended opportunity has fueled Chicago Cubs reliever Gavin Hollowell's success
PITTSBURGH - The up-and-down life between Triple A and the majors was all right-hander Gavin Hollowell knew the previous four years as a not-yet-established reliever. Hollowell entered the season with 40 career big-league appearances, most of them (26) coming during the 2023 season in the Colorado Rockies organization.
Chicago Cubs flash leather to back Matthew Boyd’s strong start in 3-2, 10-inning win vs. Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH — Any given night someone on the Chicago Cubs seems to step up defensively. Friday night was Ian Happ’s and Nico Hoerner’s turn. They each delivered a key defensive sequence that helped left-hander Matthew Boyd and the Cubs hold off the Pittsburgh Pirates for a 3-2 win in 10 innings at PNC Park.
Chicago Cubs prospect James Triantos savoring 1st big-league call-up: ‘It’s really cool to be here’
PITTSBURGH — For a few moments Friday afternoon before getting in his pregame defensive work, James Triantos stood on the dirt in front of the visitors dugout at PNC Park and slowly turned to take everything in. This wasn’t Triantos’ first time at the ballpark. He attended a Pirates game about 13 years ago while growing up in Virginia, roughly a four-hour drive from Pittsburgh. But this time Triantos arrived as a big-leaguer.

Chicago baseball report: Sox feeling Andrew Benintendi’s veteran presence — and Cubs calling up James Triantos
A .500 homestand against the Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers didn’t do much to help the Cubs’ attempt to cut in the Milwaukee Brewers’ division lead. And the schedule is only going to get tougher the next two weeks. Sitting 7 games back of the Brewers, the Cubs head on a seven-game trip to Pittsburgh and St. Louis, then return home to welcome the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers to Wrigley Field with the Aug. 3 trade deadline also looming.

How a refined approach and more walks are helping drive Pete Crow-Armstrong's stellar season for Chicago Cubs
Earlier this month, Pete Crow-Armstrong went through his typical pregame routine in the batting cage with Chicago Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee. The conversation during the work shifted to Crow-Armstrong’s walks. Crow-Armstrong thought he could have a chance to reach 40 walks by the All-Star break. Mallee agreed that would be a great spot for the 24-year-old, whose career high of 29 walks in a season came last year.
Chicago Cubs get a boost in Tuesday’s win from former New York Mets teammates David Peterson and Michael Conforto
By the time Michael Conforto got his usual opportunity off the bench, the Chicago Cubs were cruising. A six-run first inning that knocked out Detroit Tigers starter Framber Valdez after 10 batters, 42 pitches and two outs gave Cubs left-hander David Peterson all the run support he needed in an 11-2 victory. Conforto's moment arrived in the fifth with the Cubs holding a seven-run lead.
‘I got very lucky’: Chicago Cubs reliever Trent Thornton avoids serious injury after 108.9 mph comebacker
Roughly 20 hours later, Trent Thornton can laugh about taking a 108.9 mph liner off his left heel. The fear of a serious injury, though, quickly set in during the immediate aftermath of the sequence Monday night. The Detroit Tigers' Riley Greene rocketed Thornton's fastball back up the middle to open the top of the 10th inning, striking the Cubs' reliever directly on his left heel. The force of the impact reverberated in Wrigley Field.
Chicago Cubs' Jameson Taillon returns to start but gives up home runs as the Detroit Tigers win in extra innings
For the first time in nearly seven weeks, Jameson Taillon took the mound feeling good about finally getting another opportunity to help the Chicago Cubs. Taillon could only watch since going on the injured list June 8 because of his left hamstring strain and as the injuries to the rotation piled up. He wanted to use that recovery time to work on his mechanics and evaluate his pitch sequencing in an effort to eliminate the home runs that too often have derailed his starts this season.

Chicago Cubs’ Jameson Taillon activated to start against Detroit Tigers; Phil Maton goes back on the IL
For a Chicago Cubs rotation that has been decimated by injuries over the last few weeks, the pitching staff’s slow journey to health took a step forward Monday with the return of right-hander Jameson Taillon. The Cubs activated Taillon from the injured list ahead of his start Monday against the Detroit Tigers. Taillon had been sidelined since June 8 with a left hamstring strain.
