The Big Story: Dame Carolyn McCall
Born in India, she had a Scottish father, Arthur McCall, who ran the Far East division of a US textile multinational, and an Irish-born mother, Colleen McCall, who worked for the British High Commission in India. She was educated in India and Singapore until her teens, then at a Roman Catholic girls’ boarding school in Derbyshire. She studied for a BA degree in history and politics at the University of Kent. McCall started her working career as a research planner at The Guardian.
The Big Story: Cally Beaton
The unsolicited advice, the condescending tone, the ignored or overlooked expertise, based on… well, pick one. Ignorance. Arrogance. Stupidity. Excess confidence. Self-entitlement. The patriarchy. If this magazine has sought to achieve one thing (several, really), it’s that women have every bit as much intellect, business acumen, knowledge, and inalienable right to challenge all of the proxies that have gone before them. And some men don’t like that.
The Big Story: Julie Kapsalis MBE
Maarten Hoffmann: Julie, you’ve been Principal and CEO at Nescot since 2022. Tell us about your role and what Nescot is. Julie Kapsalis: Nescot is the North East Surrey College of Technology. It's a college that's actually very close to my heart, in that I grew up two minutes from there. So whilst I didn't attend Nescot, it was my local college. It is a Further and Higher Education college. We train around 6,000 students every year, that’s adults and young people.
The longest range EVs
Just a decade ago, only one EV – the Tesla Model S – could even break the 200-mile barrier. Now, some of the latest electric cars can allegedly do more than 500 miles before stopping to charge – further than many people will even want to drive in one day.
Cleankill solves long-running rat problem after pensioners ripped off
A recent rat investigation by Cleankill Pest Control highlighted the importance of choosing your contractor carefully and identifying the root cause of an infestation, rather than simply treating the symptoms. Cleankill Surveyor Mark Hobbs was called to a private property where the homeowner reported hearing rats in an extension void. Rats had also been spotted outside the property, prompting Mark to investigate the drainage system.
Futurehub puts business leaders under the spotlight
Business leaders need a lot of qualities. The ability to think on your feet comes to mind, as does operating in high-pressure, high-scrutiny situations. Then there's compromise and delegation with other leaders. Most of these situations don't arise when you're pitching boozy cheese ice cream to your friends' bosses. Futurehub has been running since 2013, developed as an amalgamation of MDHUB's leadership development work that stretches back over 20 years.
Big Story: Andy Burnham
Andy Burnham will be the latest entrant through the farcical revolving door at No. 10 Downing Street. He returns to Westminster on a wave of increasing polarity within UK politics and society. He has decades of mess to clear up, and just three years to do it in before the electorate has another chance to voice its opinion. So what can one expect from the new incumbent down from Manchester? Firstly, will he call a General Election? Highly unlikely.
Employment v self employment: Crunching the global numbers
A large global survey of more than 5,000 people exploring attitudes toward self-employment has revealed that Britons prefer traditional employment (working for a boss) to self-employment, more than in many other countries in the study. Interestingly, though, the majority of British people would still prefer to be self-employed (68.7% said so, compared with 31.3% who prefer to work for someone else).
Motoring: Audi SQ7 Vorsprung
The trend of souping up large SUVs continues unabated, this time with the behemoth Audi Q7, having been breathed on by the Audi engineers with an S in front of the name. The aim appears to be to make a huge SUV drive like a sports car, following on from the very first, the BMW X5, which drove like a normal car.
Awaab’s Law: why landlords must prepare now
The introduction of Awaab’s Law marks one of the most significant changes to housing standards and landlord responsibilities in recent years. Named after two-year-old Awaab Ishak, who tragically died following prolonged exposure to mould in his family’s social housing flat, the legislation is designed to ensure that tenants living in unsafe or unhealthy conditions receive prompt action from landlords and housing providers.
Fertility treatment in the workplace
Fertility treatment is increasingly recognised in the workplace, with more organisations signing up to be ‘fertility friendly’. Research from Fertility Matters at Work (FMAW) has found that 69.5% of employees will take sick leave during fertility treatment to avoid disclosing their situation to a manager — yet unplanned sickness absence is far harder to manage than planned, flexible working arrangements.
Big Interview: Matt Turner MBE
MAARTEN HOFFMANN: Tell us about your childhood, family background and early career. MATT TURNER MBE: I had a really simple yet fun childhood. My brother James and I were always super competitive. We lived in a semi-detached house, shared a bedroom and had a work ethic drilled into us from an early age. My dad had his own small catering business that I would often work in at weekends, and I don’t think we ever had a family holiday as money was always tight.
How London Gatwick is championing a unified South East investment proposition
London Gatwick’s role in the South East goes far beyond connecting passengers to destinations. It is a major economic anchor for the region – linking people and businesses to global markets and bringing partners together around investment, skills and growth. UKREiiF (the UK Real Estate Investment and Infrastructure Forum) 2026 offered a clear illustration of that role.
The Beast from Bavaria
As my loyal readers will know, after 16 years of reviewing cars, my Car of the Year for three years running was the Audi RS6 Avant - a car with the speed of a Lambo, the road manners of a rally car, but big enough to move house. Sadly, Audi has decided to discontinue that model, and when it returns, it will be electric, so that’s the end of that! So, is there another such hugely competent and involving car?
Motoring: The electric Ford Capri
It is always a worry when a manufacturer remakes one of their iconic models, and none more so than the Ford Capri. The original Capri was much loved when it was launched in 1968, as in a British world of dull cars, the fastback coupe Capri had a whiff of the American ‘big boy’ cars about it. Named after the Italian island of Capri, having been refused the right to use the first choice of name, which was Colt, as Mitsubishi had registered that name, so the Capri was chosen.
Motoring: Bentley Flying Spur
This is the fastest four-door model ever produced by the Crewe-based manufacturer, with a whopping 782bhp that hauls it to 62mph in 3.3 seconds and up to 177mph at the top end, with the e-motor filling in for the turbo lag. That’s not outrageous for a high-end supercar, but to do it in the extreme comfort and luxury of a 2.7-tonne Bentley is extraordinary.
Motoring: Porsche Macan Turbo Electric
Porsche’s mid-sized SUV is their biggest-selling UK car and the general gateway into Porsche ownership. The model has been reinvented as an electric-only model. This is probably the most versatile Porsche-badged daily driver you can buy. And the big news is that the switch to EV hasn’t dulled the Macan’s edge. In fact, it’s sharpened the prospect. There are five launch models: the Macan, Macan 4, Macan 4S, Macan GTS and the fastest model, the Macan Turbo.
2025 Sussex Business Awards Winners Announced
Hosted by acclaimed comedian Hal Cruttenden, the black-tie ceremony unveiled 16 exceptional winners - each demonstrating the strength, innovation and ambition that continue to position Sussex as a powerhouse business region. Now in its 37th year, the Sussex Business Awards has firmly cemented its reputation as the region’s foremost celebration of commercial excellence.
The Big Conversation: Susannah Atherton
The English Soap Company was founded by an odd event. Bob Butts was cleaning out a barn on his property when he came across a dusty old machine. A bit of research showed that it was a very old soap bar making device and Bob, ever curious, decided to get it going. Some months later, he had actually produced a few bars of soap and tried to sell it to the local shops but they were rough samples and no one was interested.
The great Chinese takeaway
The Chinese have invaded in terms of their automotive offerings as the UK is being flooded with cheap Chinese-made models - they seem to be everywhere these days, and this is just the start. Unlike most manufacturers who rent space on ships to move their products, the Chinese have built an entire fleet of ships just for this purpose.
Excellence isn’t a destination
I can’t say I love long drives, but they’ve become my classroom - time to listen to a podcast and arrive with a new perspective. Recently, I listened to Emma Grede in conversation with Mel Robbins. Emma is the founding partner of SKIMS, co-founder and CEO of Good American, host of @aspirewithemmagrede - and a mum of four (no imposter syndrome here). The interview held my attention for the entire 1 hour and 26 minutes, which is rare.
What judging the BAHBAs taught me about business
A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of announcing the ‘New Business of the Year’ for the Brighton & Hove Business Awards. My ‘30 words of fame’ moment took place halfway through the ceremony, when I took to the podium at St Peter’s Church and revealed the winner. The few hundred attendees cheered, the winners thanked their team, and the photographer choreographed a symbolic photograph to mark the occasion. A perfect Platinum-style bowtie to complete my first BAHBAs experience.
Being flexible - Platinum Media Group
I’ve often felt I’m great at flexing to my context and adapting to new challenges, but if I’m honest with myself, I am great at being flexible and adapting to anything, if it’s something I want to do. Recently, I’ve been exploring what more is required of me as a leader in this changing world and what I can learn to apply to my business and my work.
What makes the ‘perfect’ supercar?
It’s a topic that divides opinion across the Reddit threads, YouTube channels and petrolhead chats, but Romans International, with a little help from AI, can finally uncover what exactly the “perfect” supercar looks like. Comparing 40 of the world’s most popular supercars, across their dimensions, materials, doors, engines and more, Romans crunched the numbers to generate the balanced blueprint using AI technology, a model we call the PJ468.
Motoring: Audi RS e-tron GT
Introduction by Motoring Editor, Maarten Hoffmann. Having edited this very well read motoring section for over 16 years and occasionally (very occasionally) l release the reins to a guest editor - and this is one of those rare events. Damien Burke, courtesy of Chris Goodman of the Focus Foundation, took the keys (from my dead cold hands) of this month’s car and spent the week with it - and no run-of-the-mill car at that, but the Audi RS e-tron GT - the company’s latest barnstorming EV.
Motoring: BMW i5 M60 Touring
It looks beautifully proportioned, well-designed, and, of course, its German engineering means it will run forever, and it will be built like a Panzer tank. The reason I have personally not driven anything but a German car for the past 20 years is that they are simply the best-built cars on the market. The two electric motors offer a total of 593bhp and provide four-wheel drive.
The sustainable business: Resilience as strategy
Resilience has become a permanent feature of business life. Over the past five years, businesses have navigated a steady stream of disruption, from the pandemic to supply chain issues, labour shortages, inflation and regulation. But this is no longer simply a story of reacting under pressure. Something more fundamental is emerging: resilience is becoming embedded in how businesses operate. In recent client conversations, I’ve seen a shift. Businesses are no longer waiting for the next shock.
The Big Story: Freddie Flintoff
There is a tendency, especially among the most unthinking in society, to believe that high, even astronomical salaries can cover all ills and ailments – physical and emotional – among sports stars. “Oh, I’d put up with that for the money he’s on…”. “What are they complaining about? They’re loaded.” is the kind of talk from the basement-dwelling troll who has neither the talent, aptitude, nor salary to offer their own experiential take on the matter.
Motoring: Honda Civic Type R - Platinum Media Group
We don’t seem to have any hot hatches available anymore after a fantastic 80s and 90s when we were awash with them, but there is one still available that has hardly changed in its 25-year history - the Honda Civic Type R. As a throwback, here it is on my drive and, as l am not quite as young as l was when ripping the backside out of this style of cars, what to make of it?
Beth’s passion for pests...
Pest control is one of the few industries that is still very male-dominated, with only around 5% of professionals being female. Cleankill Pest Control’s Beth Pemberton-Hill is hoping to encourage and inspire other women that a career in pest control can be rewarding, fun and fulfilling. While pest control is still an unusual choice for a woman, with many wanting to run a mile at the sight of a rodent, Beth has no fear and absolutely loves her job. How did she get into pest control?
Meet John Thacker - Platinum Media Group
John Thacker is a book enthusiast. Armed with the cumulative knowledge from hundreds of non-fiction books, he now runs the MDHUB Shortcut Book Club, as its name implies, a book club aimed at busy SME leaders with limited time. A chartered accountant by training, John spent most of his career running a busy firm, which consumed his life, eating away at both his leisure time and more importantly, precious hours spent with his family. This took its toll, and John completely burned out.
Influencers Forum: Investing For The Future
Beyond seeking a financial return and building personal wealth, the next generation of investors will look to invest in ways that align with their values and passions, such as tech innovation, and environmental and social justice issues. There is also a tendency for younger investors to place the company’s purpose ahead of the return. We will consider the more traditional types of investments, such as stocks and shares, as well as alternatives such as impact investing and real estate crowdfunding.
Considering ‘Heads of Terms’ in private equity transactions
Heads of Terms (‘HoTs’), also known as Memoranda of Understanding, Letters of Intent or Term Sheets, are usually short (five to ten-page) documents setting out the main terms of a transaction that have already been agreed by the principals. Similar to their M&A counterparts, they provide the parties with the opportunity to negotiate some of the fundamental equity terms ahead of getting into the more lengthy and complicated shareholders’ agreements and articles of association.

Brighton’s first community radio station, RadioReverb 97.2FM, celebrated its 18th birthday this March. Its output is an eclectic mix of spoken word and music, reflecting the diverse, inclusive community of Brighton & Hove.
Employers kick hiring decisions into long grass
UK employers are continuing to kick major hiring and firing decisions into the long grass with latest data from the ManpowerGroup Employment Outlook Survey showing 42% of organisations plan no changes to their employee headcount for Q2 (April – June) 2025. An additional 11% don’t know if or how their staffing levels will change. ManpowerGroup’s Employment Outlook Survey (MEOS) is released every three months to measure employers’ intentions during the next quarter.

They also partnered with career experts JobLeads to share five job hopping dos and don’ts to fast-track your career smartly. Workers who have been with their current employer for fewer than 12 months are considered job hoppers.
Why humans will always beat AI over... human issues
The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) over recent years and even months is something very few can fail to see. With many clients now looking to AI to assist them with their legal needs, it’s important to acknowledge key failings in the technology that humans excel at. When it comes to private client work, and assisting clients with such personal matters, you can’t beat the human touch. It’s important to recognise some key points; We are all unique It’s not true to say a Will is a Will is a Will.
The sustainable business: Time to pivot again
The UK government has, since its October Budget, faced ever-louder criticism over changes to taxation. The cost of employing staff will increase this April with changes to employers’ NICs, and businesses have responded with various cost-cutting methods. Controversial changes to Inheritance Tax on farms and family-owned businesses are expected to remain in place, with farmers taking to the streets in protest.

Scenic rail travel - Platinum Media Group
I have often suggested rail travel to people only to be told that trains simply take too much time, but sentiments are changing. We can all imagine being one of those unfortunate souls who were meant to land at Heathrow but ended up in Frankfurt or Zurich after the fire at a substation last month. I, for one, had a couple of three to four-hour flights last year that saw me getting to my destination nearly 18 hours later! And these were just the worst of the bunch.
Appreciating depreciation - Platinum Media Group
The adage that driving off the garage forecourt in your new car sees you lose a third of its value within the first mile used to be fairly true, depending on which model you purchased. But have things changed? I don’t want to diminish your excitement of buying a new car, but it’s important to remember how much your shiny new purchase is going to be worth when you come to sell it.
