Turn your M4 Mac mini into a small-but-mighty 'Mac Pro' [Setups]
The M4 Mac mini disguised an a toddler Mac Pro sits to the left of the displays. Photo: [email protected] In my lengthy travels among computer setups displayed on social media, I saw a cool Mac mini case a while back that made the compact M4/M4 Pro desktop computer look like a little Mac Pro. I wondered if it’d catch on as a cool, must-have accessory, but then I never saw it again — until now.

WWDC24 might bring zero new Macs
Don’t get your heart set on new Macs launching at WWDC24 next week. A generally reliable tipster predicts that that’ll be none unveiled at Apple’s developer conference. And not just Macs. Supposedly the agenda includes no new hardware at all. Don’t expect new Macs at WWDC24 Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference is supposed to be about software — it’s the traditional venue to introduce major upgrades to macOS, iOS, watchOS, etc. But sometimes hardware slips in, too.
Mac Studio and Mac Pro with M3 Ultra may have been axed
Mac Studio and Mac Pro models updated with M3 Ultra that had previously been expected soon have reportedly been cancelled. Apparently, professional Mac users shouldn’t look out for new hardware with faster processors at WWDC24 in June. And the wait might actually stretch until next year’s WWDC25. It seems Apple has already moved on from its M3 series so there are no new chips to ready go into these high-end desktops. No Mac Studio or Mac Pro with Apple M3 Ultra?
Macs with AI-focused M4 chip launching this year
Mac users won’t have to wait until 2025 for the Apple M4 processor, according to a reputable Apple tipster. The replacement for the current M3 will put an emphasis on AI, and will start appearing in Macs this autumn. A previous report said the improvements in the upcoming Apple A18 iPhone processor also launching this fall will focus on artificial intelligence, too. LG C2 smart TV tops user's list of fave computer displays
Today’s Mac Pro and smart TV setup is a rare find for two reasons. First, Mac Pro costs so much that we rarely see it in the wild. Second, while big smart TVs used as computer displays continue to gain popularity, we don’t often hear users saying they’re one of the best they’ve ever had. But that’s the case with this LG C2 smart TV setup, used by a photographer and musician. In it, a powerful cheese-grater Mac Pro drives a gargantuan 42-inch smart TV as an external display.
Some of the best 2024 Macs are still ahead of us
After Apple’s thunderous launch of the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max chips a few months ago, these chips likely will roll out as spec bumps in the MacStudio, Mac Pro, and Mac mini later this year. Additionally, Apple enthusiasts are eager to see how the m3 ultra chip will further enhance Mac performance in upcoming releases. An M4 MacBook Pro remains a possibility for this fall.
Classic iMac G4 looks on as Mac Pro drives monster display [Setups]
It’s somewhat rare that we come across a Mac Pro setup on social media for the obvious reason that Apple’s top desktop computer costs a fortune. And the ones we see are often older than 2019’s cheese grater design. But today’s Mac Pro and smart TV setup is a welcome exception to that rule. It sports a powerful cheese-grater Mac Pro driving a gargantuan smart TV as an external display.
Redesign could give Apple M3 Ultra processor wicked performance boost
Apple’s upcoming M3 Ultra chip won’t consist of two M3 Max processors merged together, according to information leaking out of Cupertino. The change from its predecessors would free up designers to make the next-gen Apple silicon even more powerful. It even raises the possibility of an M3 Extreme, a workstation-level processor that would give the Mac Pro a reason to exist.
Best-selling Macs by far are MacBook Pro and MacBook Air
MacBook Pro and MacBook Air combine to account for a staggering 90% of Apple’s Mac sales. That’s according to a new report Wednesday about best-selling Macs from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP). The laptops’ dominant popularity over desktop Macs has long been evident. But the new report showing 2023 data really puts an exclamation point on it.

Say what you will about old Apple hardware, it’s cool and it’s got staying power — sometimes to an amazing degree. Today’s featured setup, for example, sports a 16-year-old Mac Pro with some modifications driving a 19-year old Cinema Display (the big one — 30 inches — first released in 2004, a mere 20 years ago). The user’s just happy she’s getting the venerable desktop machine to run as fast as her spritely young MacBook Pro … from 2012. This post contains affiliate links.

SATA

Apple Vision Pro first impressions: Fab or fatally flawed? [The CultCast]
This week on Cult of Mac’s podcast: The first impressions of Apple’s just-unveiled Vision Pro headset leave us mind = blown. Still, no matter how vivid the VR is … or how flawless the visionOS user interface is … or how “natural” the headset looks to be … can anything justify its $3,499 price tag? Also on The CultCast: The load of new Macs showcased at WWDC23 left us surprised — and just a little perplexed. Who exactly is the Mac Pro for?
Biggest reveals from WWDC23 you shouldn't miss
The Keynote from WWDC23 was unusually jam-packed with huge announcements. Naturally, the first official details of new iOS, macOS, iPadOS and watchOS versions came to light, as is traditional. But Apple also used its annual developer conference to take the wraps off quite a bit of hardware. And CEO Tim Cook used Apple’s classic “One more thing” line to unveil Vision Pro, the augmented-reality headset that was the absolute star of WWDC23.
Apple classics: If it ain't broke, don't replace it [Setups] Original
As the old saying goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” And if “it” refers to cool old Apple gear, you should reconsider replacing it, too — especially if it’s still going strong. Today’s featured setup boasts a “trash can” Mac Pro from 2013. It drives not one, not two but three Cinema Displays of yesteryear. And that’s not all for the workstation’s retro wares. It also features Apple’s old iSight webcam, a Mighty Mouse and a Thunderbolt 2 hard drive for Time Machine backups.
'Mac setup in a box' is a dual-Mac Studio powerhouse [Setups]
We enjoy a lot of variety in our computer setups coverage, from the ultra-minimalist to the mega-maximalist. Today’s featured rig sports two pumped-up Mac Studios, two old Mac Pro “trash cans,” a gaming PC, dual displays and a tremendous array of audio gear. It falls in the latter category, obviously (“mega”). The lengthy gear list below doesn’t even cover everything in the powerhouse workstation, but it covers all the key elements. New Mac Pro and 15-inch MacBook Air could arrive at WWDC23 Original
Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Air and new Mac Pro could launch later than initially believed. The machines are reportedly on track to launch between late spring and summer. This hints at the possibility of the new Macs debuting at this year’s WWDC. Apple silicon-Mac Pro might launch at WWDC 2023 Apple usually holds a March event to announce new products. Rumors have claimed the long overdue Apple silicon Mac Pro and the 15-inch MacBook Air could debut this month. But that seems unlikely to happen.
Apple remains committed to completely dumping Intel chips
A high-level Apple executive says an upgraded Mac Pro is on the way, even if he did so in a backhanded way. The company’s VP of Worldwide Product Marketing said in an interview that his company has “a clear goal to transition fully to Apple silicon.” That’s an oblique reference to the Mac Pro, the only macOS computer still running an Intel processor. A replacement with an Apple M-series chip could be out in mere weeks.
Why the Mac Pro lacks upgradable RAM and support for eGPUs
The just-launched 2023 Mac Pro lacks features considered critical for workstations: upgradable RAM and support for eGPUs. But this isn’t Apple blindly making an error — it’s an inescapable fact of the M-series’ unified memory architecture. The limitation isn’t new: it’s been known since the M1 processor was announced. But Tuesday’s release of a top-tier macOS workstation shines a spotlight on the problem.
Apple’s Masive MacBook Pro Mistakes
Updated Jan 29th: article originally posted Jan 28th With the launch of its new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, Apple brought more power to its professional-grade laptops. No major AirPods, iPad and Apple Watch upgrades planned in 2023
Every year, Apple has some significant hardware upgrades planned for at least a few devices in its product lineup. 2023 could be an outlier, though. This year, Apple’s major hardware launches will include its first AR/VR headset and the iPhone 15 series. While other products in the company’s lineup will receive a refresh, they will be relatively minor upgrades.
Apple silicon Mac Pro might not feature user-upgradeable RAM
Contrary to rumors, the upcoming Apple silicon Mac Pro might disappoint many in the design department. A new report suggests the forthcoming Mac Pro refresh will have the same design as the 2019 Intel-based model. The Apple silicon Mac Pro is widely expected to launch later this year. It would stand out in the Mac lineup by offering a certain degree of user upgradability but come with non-upgradeable system memory.
Mac Pro and M2 Mac mini pegged for launch at huge Apple March event

Apple seemingly cancels M2 Extreme Mac Pro
At WWDC20, Apple promised to complete its transition to Apple silicon inside Macs in two years. That timeline has long gone, but the company is yet to reveal its 2019 Intel Mac Pro replacement. A new report details the reason behind the delay in the Mac Pro’s launch. It also sheds light on why contrary to initial rumors, Apple won’t launch an M2 Extreme Mac Pro.
Apple Leak Reveals Disappointing Mac Pro Cancellation
In the same weekend that Apple will be answering the desires of many MacBook Air fans, it’s also being reported that the potential of the Mac Pro is going to be cut back, with the cancellation of one of the most powerful options. While a larger screen on the MacBook Air will be welcomed by many at the bottom of Apple’s macOS laptop portfolio, the decisions that have created good news for the geekerai are not so rosy at the top end of the portfolio.
85-inch screen towers over 3 Cinema Displays under glass [Setups]
Occasionally a computer setup crops up that just makes you say, “WTF?” That’s what a colleague said about a DIY extravaganza he came across in which three 30-inch Cinema Displays were mounted under glass inside a desk. The Cinema Display imagery shows up on a mammoth 85-inch screen above — all in a huge, homemade desk assembly. WTF, indeed. This post contains affiliate links. Maxed-out Mac Pro stars in Apple-riffic rig [Setups]

Since then it has metastasized into a monstrous beast with a maxed-out Mac Pro, a 16-inch M1 Max MacBook Pro, a 12.9-inch iPad Pro, iPad mini and dual Pro Display XDRs. And the custom-made desk with lights against a dramatic backdrop of 3D wall panels really enhances the setup, too. This post contains affiliate links.
Mac enters third year of two-year transition to Apple chips
At the launch of Apple silicon in 2020, the Mac-maker committed itself to a two-year transition away from Intel processors. Today marks the first day of year three of that transformation but the Mac Pro still uses Intel chips. Apple missed its deadline. There has not even been a mention from Apple of a replacement macOS workstation with an M-series processor. A few leaked details are all we have.
Developer shows Mac Pro is not Apple's only 'cheese grater' [Setups]
The Mac Pro of recent vintage is famously compared to a cheese grater because of the holes in its casing’s design that look like a huge version of the kitchen tool. But did you know it’s not the only high-end product Apple makes that follows that design? Today’s featured M1 Max MacBook Pro setup shows it. How often do you see the back of a Pro Display XDR in photographs? Plenty of people admiring the setup expressed surprise that the backside of Apple’s top display is full-on cheese grater.
Next Mac Pro chip could be 4x more powerful than M2 Max
The M-series processor in the upcoming Mac Pro desktop will reportedly give it a dramatic speed boost. It could be “at least” 2x or 4x as powerful as Apple’s upcoming M2 Max chip for high-end MacBooks. The previous Pro desktop is the last in Apple’s product lineup still designed around an Intel chip. Apple is allegedly building processors that can beat it. Here are the Macs that Apple didn't announce today ... but might come soon

A surprise entry is a new Apple TV 4K at a lower price with a USB-C Siri Remote.
