Letter: Dress codes need to be equally enforced
School dress codes have been in school systems for decades. While they do regulate the clothing students wear, they are often biased. Most rules revolve around girls and the way they dress. There are few rules regarding boys. The ones that do exist are rarely enforced. Some boys will actively break the school dress code but never get in trouble. Instead of only enforcing the dress code on the girls, the guys should be punished equally.
In Ruins: Reflections beyond Kuwait,by Mai Al-Nakib
Photos by Mai Al-Nakib / Courtesy of the author Civilizations, empires, dynasties, and monarchies end, leaving behind ruins of their fabled splendor. Traces of achievements become more or less decipherable, contingent upon the mercy of elements and vagaries of time. Global ascents have been awesome. The point, however, is that no matter how accomplished or established the power, no matter how seemingly eternal, its passing is guaranteed.

The Radical Gospel of H. L. Hix, by Rob Vollmar
The Gospel According to H. L. Hix (Broadstone Books, 2020) is an audacious book that foregrounds translation as a means of critiquing our understanding of the stories about Jesus that have animated Western culture for two millennia. Discarding the binary of canonical and noncanonical texts, H. L. Hix braids the extant strands of various texts to weave a found narrative tapestry that is both distinctive among gospels and linguistically arresting.
Zvonko Karanović’s Surreal Sleepwalkers, by Angus Woodward
If Serbian poet and novelist Zvonko Karanović were a painter, he would be a surrealist. In the forty-one dark prose poems of Sleepwalkers on a Picnic, in English and Serbian parallel texts translated by Biljana D. Obradović (Diálogos Books, 2020), he depicts a dreamlike urban existence in which nameless men fend off angst and emptiness among featureless buildings, generally unsurprised at the bizarre circumstances they find themselves in.
Intern’s Pick, by Olivia McCourry
Margarita Liberaki Three Summers Trans. Karen Van Dyck NYRB Three Summers begins with a mystery. Katerina’s absent grandmother is an enigma to her family. Katerina fixates on this character and romanticizes her life, which holds a looming presence over the narrative. The rest of the family sees the grandmother’s departure as a betrayal. The rejection of the traditional family structure by the grandmother shows how each of the characters deals with loss.
