Fringe 2023: Sherlock Holmes: The Speckled Band
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4.5 out of 5. Sherlock Holmes: The Speckled Band is a performance of the traditional work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes: The Speckled Band follows both Holmes and Watson trying to solve the mystery of Helen Stoner, the death of her sister, and the involvement of their stepfather Sr. Grimsby Roylott. Both Holmes and Watson travel to Helen’s home to investigate how her sister died in a room nobody could enter.
Fringe 2023: Top of the World
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Top Of The World is currently being performed at theSpace @ Surgeons Hall, and follows the life of Audrey and her current phobias. The performance begins with the main character, Audrey, on the Graham Norton show, or at least pretending that she is. Whilst the performance was set in the present day, it is clear that Audrey is still living in the early 2000s, and this is clearly portrayed on the stage through the set.
Fringe 2023: Emotionally Unreasonable
⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 2.5 out of 5. Emotionally Unreasonable was the first stand-up comedy musical I have ever been to. I found that the songs were executed well, and the lyrics matched the jokes and tone of the show. I can imagine that in some cases this sort of comedy could come across as uncomfortable and cringe-worthy, however the music in Emotionally Unreasonable didn’t.
Fringe 2023: Something Educational
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Something Educational has been produced by Act One Scene One, and is being performed at theSpace @ Niddry Street. Five characters in one friendship group have been trapped together for their last 24 hours at their boarding school in northern Scotland. Having five characters allowed for the lives five different pupils to be explored. What made it so humorous was that there was very little explanation needed for each character.
Fringe 2023: Ay Up, Hitler!
⭐⭐ Rating: 2 out of 5. Ay Up, Hitler! is being performed by Gamma Ray Theatre at theSpace @ Surgeons Hall, suggests that Hitler never died, but rather himself and three prominent Nazis escaped after Germany lost the Second World War and have relocated undercover in Yorkshire until he can create his Fourth Reich. The actual basis of the plot is rather intriguing and there is comparisons to today’s society which do provide interesting and thought provoking ideas.
Fringe 2023: Attendants
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. As we entered theatre 2 at theSpace on the Mile, the cabin crew handed all “passengers” of the performance a leaflet titled ‘This for flying with … Applesby Air’. This, along with the theatre itself feeling reminiscent of an airport lounge, created a strong start for Attendants. The jokes were both relevant and realistic, which allowed for the comedy to be enjoyed by all of the audience. My personal favourite was the stag do and the hen party that flew on the airline.
Fringe 2023: Dough
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Written and directed by David Lescot and performed by the Compagnie du Kaïros/Something for the Weekend Group, Dough provides dark humour over the main character’s life. Something I loved was we see the main character from birth to the end and see how the financial thoughts and positions of this one individual change so much throughout their life.
Fringe 2023: I Love You, Now What?
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 5 out of 5. Written by Sophie Craig and produced by The REcreate Agency, I Love You, Now What? is a heart wrenching and accurate depiction of the process of grief and how it transforms the life of those who it impacts. Upon entering the theatre there was a tissue on the seat with the words ‘you might need this’ on it. Spoiler, the tissue was right. I Love You, Now What?
Fringe 2023: Dom- The Play
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Dom – The Play follows the political career of Dominic Cummings, former Chief Adviser to Boris Johnson. The performance follows the political circus that is Westminster from Cummings’ involvement in politics until his departure. Featuring in the play include political members globally including President Obama, Nicola Sturgeon and Angela Merkel.
Please stop vaping near me
I really don’t understand vaping. How has it just become so integrated into today’s society? It is something that is incredibly difficult to avoid in 2023. You walk down the street and the toxic fumes are everywhere, I have been to clubs with people vaping, and I have had customers at work vape in the restaurant. Who deemed this to be appropriate? Since there has been tougher restrictions on smoking the promotion of vaping has been seen as a better alternative.
Where has theatre etiquette gone?
Going to the theatre is one of my favourite pastimes. You look forward to it for weeks. Every year, just before Christmas, I go to the theatre with my mum and brother, it is one of my favourite days of the year. Last Christmas we went to see The Lion King at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. I didn’t expect the people in front of us to be eating tuna sandwiches.
When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit: This is Why I Study History
I knew I wanted to read History for eight years before university. My degree has since shown me what I love about my degree and what I don’t. Sometimes, I feel I have fallen out of love with my degree. Now I would say I have fallen back in love with it, thanks to the book that made me love it in the first place: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr. I vividly remember my Year Six teacher handing me the book and asking that I read it, and it retains its impression on me a decade later.
