As death after death occurs, it is evident that incarceration in Alabama is becoming a death sentence instead of being used for rehabilitation. On top of the rising death toll, Governor Kay Ivey wants to use $100 million dollars out of Alabama’s school funds to build two new ‘megaprisons’ in rural Alabama. But the humanitarian crisis and deep seeded corruption in Alabama’s prison system is not something you would find in national headlines.
Alabama is no stranger to gun violence; it has the fourth highest rate of gun deaths in the nation, with an average of 1,504 people shot and killed with a gun every year. Alabama is a ticking time bomb for a shooting to happen. Shootings across the state underscore the deadly effects of the lack of laws in Alabama to promote gun safety, as our gun violence rate continues to rise. Being a black girl, on a campus where 11.6% of other students look like you, is hard. Like scary hard. Whether you’re in class, an extracurricular activity, or even a party, it feels like everywhere you look around you can’t see anyone you can relate to. I first noticed I was the only black girl in my Legal Environment of Business class at the beginning of the ffall semester.
“I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.” Fannie Lou Hamer’s infamous words have stuck with Black women through the fight for equality, racial justice, the gun violence crisis, and so many other fights for social justice. I’m part of a generation of young women who have borne the brunt of this harsh reality, and we are taking action. Growing up in the South, I saw Black women supporting my community when our so-called leaders would not.
