Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Just a basic writing position. Worked my way up to become the first ever writer of the month for my site, then got promoted to editor.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, actually! Way before my time, as I’m only 20 right now. I would love to try it out though, and have always wanted to do so.

How is social media changing news?

I believe it’s changing news in the way that we can more spontaneously erupt. There’s more trends to follow, more potential for big stories.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

There’s a guy who writes for Tarps Off Sports named Mclovin, I love the super bad movie so I’m going with him.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To me, it means working your tail off because you love what you do. It’s that insatiable urge to create that keeps you up at night.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

Never pay attention to hashtags to be frank.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Literally any way. Contact me via email, and we can communicate however from that point.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

This will be hilarious to most, but my phone and some old prehistoric laptop. We also use Wordpress, Grammarly, and much more.

What's your favorite social network?

Right now, it’s definitely Twitter. However, I do love me some Facebook. The free marketing potential for both is insane.

Who do you wish followed you?

It’s actually something I never sit around thinking about. Life is much bigger then that to me. I’m looking to create a legacy.

Why did you become a journalist?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer, and this was my means to do so. I love what I do, and I am very lucky.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, actually. During that team I kept my writing private, except to friends or family. I did win a school-wide writing contest though.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I think my most proudest achievement would have to be my Britain Hart piece. It was written on an urge, and it kinda blew up.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The only advice I could truly offer at this stage in my career is, don’t give up. Keep working and never stop!

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime! I’m a natural born people person and I’m open to discussing anything!

What's the best pitch you ever got?

It’s gotta be the pitch by the leader of OTH MMA, Lewis. Something like: “if you want a writing job, hit me up.”

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I don’t think I’ve ever gotten a bad pitch before, haha. However, I have seen some pretty bad attempts at getting hired on to my company.

What's your favorite drink?

It’s gotta be any type of propel at the moment.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

With my family or at work.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

It would have to be MMAFighting. They have a very creative team filled with diverse journalists.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I think it’s the misconception by fighter’s towards journalists that, “journalists can’t fight.” I beg to differ..
