What was your first job as a journalist?
Not including my college paper or internship, my first professional job was as a copy editor for The State, the newspaper in Columbia, S.C.

E-mail only. There are fewer more maddening annoyances than missing a callback from a source because someone called with a pitch,

Twitter, which fits the psyche of the adrenaline-fueled deadline junkie.
Why did you become a journalist?
I was studying literature and linguistics in grad school and thought I'd pay the bills putting my language skills to use at the local paper.
