Thompson on Cotton: Traders Focused on Economic Troubles Rather Than Fundamentals
Some key economic data and the monthly WASDE report were released last week. With a market keen on reacting to the news of the day, active trading came as no surprise. The week began with expectations of a follow through to the prior week’s rally. The market has now posted a loss in eight out of the past nine weeks.
Texas LRGV: Cotton Insects Mostly Quiet, Keep Eyes Open for Sugarcane Aphids, Rice Stink Bugs in Sorghum
Photo by Danielle Sekula, Texas AgriLife Extensions General Situation Harvest continued again this week for corn and grain sorghum as growers worked around some rain received on Wednesday. East part of the Valley received anywhere from 0.7” to 1.0” inches of rain while the west part of the Valley received 0.2”-0.5” inches of rain. Hot, humid, and muddy in most fields around the Valley with plenty of mosquitos to go with that.
Texas West Plains IPM: Mostly Quiet but Keep Your Eyes Open
Let me first start with grain sorghum and corn, since it is relatively easy to summarize right now. I have not confirmed sugarcane aphids (SCA) being found on grain sorghum in Lamb, Hockley, or Cochran Counties. We continue to find grasshoppers along field margins. In young whorl stage corn and milo feeding in the whorl is common but not severe or treatable. I would encourage producers to monitoring late planted grain on a regular basis from here out for SCA, midge, worms, and spider mites.
