Money Lessons My Mom Taught Me
My mom was hugely influential in teaching me my first money lessons and instilling good financial habits at an early age. The underpinnings of her knowledge and encouragement were invaluable and still are to this day. Coming from a prosperous family, she learned about hardship at an early age. Separated from her family, they perished at the hands of the Nazis. With $5 in her pocket from the US government, she made her way to the states in her early twenties.
Personal Finance Lessons From The Richest Man In Babylon
A Timeless Classic On The Basics of Money Personal finance lessons are all around us in our everyday lives. Every day we handle money without thinking about the consequences of making poor decisions. However, we may not grasp our own financial mistakes. We can learn better financial habits from The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason, among my all-time favorites. This book can help anyone avoid financial blunders, create wealth and build a financially secure future.
The Pros And Cons of Credit Cards
“Once you get into debt, it’s hell to get out. Don’t let credit card debt carry over. You can’t get ahead paying eighteen percent.” Charlie Munger, Vice-Chairman, Berkshire Hathaway For me, credit cards have always been a double-edged sword, a fight between good and evil, or in Biblical terms, a blessing and a curse. Growing up, my parents predominantly used cash, using their retail business’s checking account to pay bills.
How To Adopt An Abundance Mindset

You have the power to develop how your mentality. How We Think Can Impact Us How we think influences how we see the world around us and can significantly impact our happiness, success, and prosperity.
How Stock Market Games Can Teach Investing
“Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Benjamin Franklin Want to learn how to invest in the stock market without losing money? Stock market games are a great way to practice whether you are a beginning investor or investing for awhile. These games are an example of learning by doing, also known as experiential learning and practical learning tools. I am passionate about teaching people, especially young students how to invest in the stock market.
10 Steps Women Should Take Negotiating Salary Compensation
” No wonder women don’t negotiate as often as men. It’s like trying to cross a minefield backward in high heels.” Sheryl Sandberg, “Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will To Lead” The gender gap remains in the usual places for women–less pay, work fewer years in the workplace with time out for children and other dependents, lower savings for retirement–but women are gaining ground. More women are graduating college and hold more graduate degrees than men.
Overcome The Challenges Of Being A Woman Breadwinner
“Above all, be the heroine of your life, not the victim.” Nora Ephron Men are still the predominant breadwinners, though, in recent years, more women are earning the mantle in their families. Nowadays, women are more likely to have more education, a career and make more than men, but still take the lead in caring for children and the home. These challenges can be overcome.
the cents of money
“For a moment, she wanted to say something about the expansiveness of room service, even measured in pesos, but she didn’t. She picked up the phone and dialed six. The man answered in English. She told him to send a margarita and a large Coke to room 213.” Walter Tevis, author of The Queen’s Gambit (1983) Have you seen Netflix’s most-watched miniseries, “The Queen’s Gambit,” yet? It is the story of Beth Harmon, an orphan after her mother commits suicide and takes place in mid-1950s Kentucky.
the cents of money
According to my grandmother, “Poor or rich, money is good to have.” We need money to pay our living expenses and support who and what we care about most. Raising a family or taking care of our parents requires funds for health care, education, and the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of life. It can help us make a difference in the lives of others through giving.
Benefits Of A Generator When Outages Impact Your Home
“We Have Power!” Craig, my husband How precious those words were when we regained utility services. Our family, among many, endured a multi-day outage caused by Hurricane Isaias. It is truly one of the more disruptive events that can happen. Typically, you don’t get a lot of warnings when outages occur. The best you can do is to be patient and go with the flow (pardon the pun!). Then hope you are covered by an effective utility company that is on the ball.
How to Stop Making Bad Money Mistakes Again and Again
Have you made a lot of money mistakes in life? I sure have. Some of mine seemed to happen over and over again. After awhile, they end up becoming bad habits of thinking and acting that impact the course of my life. When habits become ingrained we have a difficult time changing our mind and consequently the actions that follow. It’s like we become Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, living the same day over and over, making the wrong decisions again and again.
How to Determine If People Really Want Help With Money
I’m totally into personal finance and love to help with money. I could teach the subject and shell out advice for hours. That’s why I love leading Financial Peace University classes so much. It satisfies my appetite. But in everyday life I rarely get into conversations about money. Why? Because people rarely ask. And even more rare are those times when I bring up the subject to someone else, even though I see bad personal finance decisions around me all the time.
Americans Share Their Biggest Financial Worries
August 10, 2015 by Brian When it comes to your money, what are your biggest financial worries? Paying the bills? Retirement? That massive chain of student loan debt wrapped around your neck? There is no shortage of issues to worry about. At each stage of life we face something that puts us on edge. This anxiety about the present and the future drives our choices for good or for bad as we attempt to solve the problems that keep us up at night.
10 Can't Miss Warren Buffett Quotes On Life and Money
Where do you seek out sound advice? The Bible or other religious literature? As I see it, the problem with a lot of advice is threefold: This makes it extremely hard to find advice that you can run with. Put the wrong advice in your head and hands and the results could be disastrous. When it comes to money, perhaps no businessmen and investor has achieved more in his lifetime than Warren Buffett.
Buffett's Last Hurrah
If nothing else (but there is more) Warren Buffett is a consistent operator, never violating his discipline: Buy quality properties with good management at a justifiable price and then hold ‘em for the next 237 years. Nobody gets rich shorting America forever and a day. By contrast, a Goldman Sachs analyst team believes Netflix Netflix should sell at 85 times next year’s projection of enterprise value to EBITDA.
S&P 500 Index Top 25: High Roads, Low Roads
Every other stock in the S&P 500′s top 25 is an underperformer. No free rides. Make a bad bet and they take your pants down in double digit increments as in ExxonMobil, Wal-Mart, Procter & Gamble, Chevron and Oracle. Sitting in the numero 25 slot is Gilead Sciences, up 22% with a market capitalization of $170 billion. A year ago, Gilead was a $100 billion property climbing a wall of worry as to when its hepatitis C drugs would peak out, encounter competition and finally go generic.
The Google Wake-Up Call
Individual investors need to measure performance relative to the NASDAQ 100. In this cycle you can’t hide in American Telephone, ExxonMobil and Coca-Cola. Google’s quarterly report is the wake-up call to shed dead paper and deal with the new reality head on, the youth movement coming into stardom. When Google spiked 16% overnight, on its outsized quarterly earnings report, I dug right down to the bottom of my shoes and said to myself buy buy, more Internet and e-commerce properties.
Greece, Dead Or Alive, Is Bearish
Greece even restored to health or plunging into bankruptcy and debt repudiation in the hundreds of billions to public and private lenders is bound to unlock powerful deflationary forces. Not just at the country level, but down to our states and municipalities. Part of the pleasure of managing money is to read the newspapers next morning to see what the financial writers think happened yesterday. Fondly, I remember Greece in the early fifties, the sun and Aegean Sea an irresistible draw.
Carl Icahn: Our Last Tycoon
Carl Icahn, proclaiming a certain stock, Apple, is a sure double is the classic ideology of catastrophe. Warren Buffett, who also burnishes his image diligently, never talks about any of his positions headed for a double. After all, American Express, first bought in 1964, has compounded generously for some 50 years. I like better Carl’s call on the market, looking treacherously perched.
Tune Out The Market's Noise Level
Look for where there’s near uniformity and then take the other side, sometimes with reckless abandon, but at least get your feet wet. If a stock or a group isn’t controversial don’t bite. How many times must I read that Janet Yellen is going slow on money market rates, or scan the Street’s music sheets toll for a pricey S&P 500 Index?
Speed Plus Endurance Horses: Apple, Gilead, Facebook, Amazon And Alibaba
Present financial markets feed on speed and volatility, but not endurance. Nothing is forever. This is unlike the mile and a half Belmont Stakes. Without endurance you don’t win the Triple Crown. American Pharaoh at the number 5 position shot out of his starting gate and never looked back. Everything is relative in racing as in market valuation. Secretariat’s time was seconds faster than Pharaoh’s 2:26.65, but Pharaoh won going away at the 16th pole.
High Intensity Players: Something's Missing
After perusing a dozen 13F filings by high intensity players, I dug right down to the bottom of my shoes and felt… nothing. No major shifts in sector concentration or de-emphasis. Few portfolio position weightings changed much. A few exceptions: Actavis remained under accumulation along with HMOs and hospital chains. Alibaba was sold on balance, but Dow Chemical and Apple showed small additions.
How to Hold Onto Inherited Wealth
First, a brief history of financial markets: • Stocks beat bonds over a 25 to 50 year time span. • Volatility of fixed income investments can equal that of equities in both directions. • The market (S&P 500 Index) can sell at book value, sometimes twice book. Yields can range from 1% up to 5% to 6% at the bottom of a cycle. • Thirty-year Treasuries, currently yielding 2.6%, in 1982 during FRB tightening yielded 15%. Five year paper, too.
Freeport-McMoRan - My Favorite Lady-Or-Tiger Stock
Because the S&P 500 Index is so extended my specs fall into 2 categories: First, the growth at almost any price Internet properties like Facebook and Alibaba. I missed Amazon but avoided Twitter as too rich even for my blood. The second category embraces low multiple properties with lots of operating leverage. Industries include airlines, raw materials and technology.
Schlumberger Is Like Hamburger, Until I See $120
Excepting some odd lot traders, almost everyone pronounces Schlumberger Schlumberger correctly, using the soft “g.” Whenever oil futures crash, however, I revert crossly to the hard “g.” Schlumberger becomes just another cyclical growth stock periodically encountering sleeping policemen in a stretch of road, holding down its momentum. Last year’s earnings peaked at $5.57, but it could be 2017 before SLB approaches that number, again. I am cursed with extended institutional memory.
Your Portfolio Vs. The 1961 Château Latour
This is a setup question, because no equity portfolio ever lasts a century. But, several Berkshire Hathaway positions do go back 50 years or so. I’m thinking of Geico, American Express, possibly Coca-Cola. And yet, Buffett opened his window and threw out ExxonMobil, a 2014 recent acquisition. Blame changeable fundamentals. Wine is a different animal, or in this case a fruit-mineral.
Tech Sells Below 10 Times Earnings?
Let’s face the facts – our pricey market is reminiscent of 2000 – ‘01. Internet plays rest fully exploited along with healthcare, in the midst of its takeover blow-off. There are few opportunities in industrials whose offshore business is sloppy. God only knows if the energy sector is bottoming out. Financials seem stalled out, waiting for the yield curve to steepen, but it’s no longer in our sights. Consider the summer of 2001, NASDAQ in tatters, precipitating a soft economy.
How Does A Rich Man Speculate?
Quietly, at first, and then noisily by letting the world know, touting your book. The best example today is Carl Icahn and his Apple gambit, now valued at $7 billion or 1% of Apple’s market capitalization. My apperceptive mass goes back 50 years when I was the bird-dog for Jack Kaplan, then worth over $100 million and denoted as a big boodle for a sole operator.
Comebacks And Turnarounds Beckon
Cellar dwellers unite. You have nothing to lose but your pains. For any stock perceived as a valuation trap where nothing good happens for years, consider taking the other side. It’s lonely there, and you will be looked upon as either insane or a pitiful dreamer. You’ve fallen in love with a concept that’s unworkable and fraught with ultimate financial risk, namely a work out, bankruptcy, a total write-off. Consider today’s pariahs: Producers of coal, iron ore, steel and copper.
Buffett's Deal-Making End Game
There was a lot not to like in the yearend report of Berkshire Hathaway. But, the stock’s trajectory, up 28%, made it unmistakably a 2014 absolute and comparative winner. All this in a year when hedge fund operators woefully underperformed the S&P 500 Index as did the majority of big capitalization stocks and managers benchmarked by this index.
13F Filings Takeaway: Own A Dirty Dozen
Personally, even idiosyncratically, I run my money in an ultra concentrated format. There are 5% to 15% positions, some through appreciation became 30% positions, Gilead Sciences, for example. I find myself over 60% invested in biotechnology. Aside from Gilead, there’s Biogen Idec, Celgene and Endo International which bought out my original holding, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals. The 13Fs of honchos show much speculation in mid-cap pharma, embracing names you probably never heard of.
Join My 2%-A-Month Club
Enormous consensus misses on our domestic economic setting – the interest rate trajectory, euro’s demise and oil’s roller coaster dive explain why The Street’s houses turned in crappy 4th quarter results with probably more to come. Volatility is here to stay. All this leads into my 2% rule. Own big cap stocks with position on the board within sectors that can grow for years to come at double digits. Why try to plumb the bottom for oil futures?
Great Humblers: (Jeez! We Shoulda Seen 'Em Coming)
My pet name for the Big Board is “The Great Humbler.” Nobody ever maxed the macro picture for more than a couple of quarters. Stock picking? We’re talking about batting averages. Ted Williams hit 406 one season. Nobody since is a challenger. Nobody extrapolated Brent oil futures below $50 a barrel. I remember Williams expounding that you can fit 24 baseballs over home plate worth swinging at. Everything else take for a ball. Never have I owned more than 24 stocks. Even a dozen feels right.
Next Year's Hockey Sticks: Apple, Gilead, Citigroup, Alibaba, Boeing And Micron
First let’s look at big cap winners for 2014 by sector. Clearly, Internet properties like Alibaba, and Facebook but not Google Twitter Fear of the economic cycle petering out drove money into healthcare, particularly biotech and healthcare providers like UnitedHealth Group Health, even Amgen. Gilead Sciences, after its 15% correction is ahead 25%, Celgene even more.
My Three Horsemen Of The NASDAQ 100: Apple, Microsoft And Gilead Sciences
Measure yourself against the NASDAQ 100 Index. Its top 20 names by market capitalization range down from Apple’s $700 billion to Starbucks at $60 billion. This is the big boys’ playground. It doesn’t include utility paper like American Telephone or basic industrials like General Motors or General Electric. Mega cap energy names – ExxonMobil and big banks like Wells Fargo and JPMorgan Chase don’t make this list, either.
If You Don't Own Apple, Actavis and Alibaba, Go Back To Sleep
When I step back after reviewing several high intensity portfolios, nobody’s going crazy, over-speculating or running a bunch of outrageously priced properties in technology, the Internet, commodities or energy, even banks. There’s eye-catching over concentration by a few managers, but you can also accuse Warren Buffett for holding 50% of his portfolio in financials. Alibaba may be walking on stilts, but it’s an affordable luxury if you’re outperforming.
Berkshire Hathaway: Thumbs Up Or Thumbs Down?
Buffett’s property is a good acting stock, up 21% year-to-date. Among the top 25 largest capitalizations in the S&P 500 Index, only 5 names did better. Fourteen of the top 25 rest as underperformers. Berkshire Hathaway is in a class with Home Depot, Walt Disney, Merck, Wells Fargo (a huge holding) and Johnson & Johnson. The highest bracket of performance belongs to Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Intel, Amgen and Gilead Sciences which advanced between 30% and 41%.
