Trench Maps enabled commanders to understand battlefield terrain and plan infantry attacks and defensive positions. Large-scale British Trench Maps were mostly printed by Ordnance Survey, with the War Office producing smaller maps. More than 34 million British Trench Maps of the Western Front were printed during the First World War. This Trench Map depicts the Somme sector with British Trenches in blue and German Trenches in red.
