OPINION: Racism is the root cause of the current issues around Alice Springs
The reporting about Mparntwe/Alice Springs has been harmful, devoid of context, and lacking basic fact-checking. But the hateful news stories and political footballing of Alice Springs issues began long before the Prime Minister’s four-hour-long visit. During his brief visit, Albanese was surrounded by politicians – only one of whom comes from Alice Springs. Did the Prime Minister truly take the time to listen to our community?
Calderdale shoppers are able to donate to charity through contactless payments
The Community Foundation for Calderdale (CFFC) has partnered with Halifax BID, Woolshops Shopping Centre, Yorkshire Payments, and Briggs Priestley Signs to launch the first permanent contactless card donation point in the area so shoppers can donate safely and help local charities. The donations will go to the Community Foundation for Calderdale who give over £1 million of grants each year to help charities and not for profits who help Calderdale residents.

As we continue to navigate our way through the current lockdown, my "PMA" has been somewhat challenged. Did Easter really happen?
We will meet again
As we enter week four of lockdown, I have reflected on the impact this has made on both my professional and personal life. As a consequence of a quite terrifying, killer virus I have to admit that the enforced lifestyle change has caused unexpected shifts in my attitude, tolerance and view of life. Time is now filled, rather than passed by in a flurry, healthy meals are planned rather than a box thrown into a microwave and new living circumstances adjusted to.
There’s no place like home
One of my all time favourite films is the iconic "The Wizard of Oz" with Judy Garland cast as the young Dorothy Gale. There are some classic quotes and songs including "You have always had the power my dear, you just had to learn it for yourself" and one which today seems more pertinent than ever "There's no place like home".
Charity begins at home
"Charity begins at home"- how often have we heard that saying? Now, more than ever this is particularly pertinent, as we are house bound and charities inparticular are feeling the devastating financial impact of the inevitable cancellation of fundraising events. Having helped raise fast approaching £3m for charities and good causes across the Yorkshire region, I appreciate first-hand how vital it is that we do not turn our backs on them during the uncertain days, weeks and months ahead.
Let’s try to keep calm and pick up the phone
I have tried my level best until now to not reference the Coronavirus in my blogs becuase I am generally "a cup full to brimming of postivity and light-heartedness" type of girl. However, the current pandemic cannot be dismissed nor taken fippantly. One by one, day by day, each and every event, awards ceremony, conference and meeting across the county has been either postponed, or cancelled.
Playing at The Piece Hall
2020 has most certainly not been the kindest of years thus far when it comes to the weather. Starting with storm Ciara, then Dennis and swiftly followed by Jorge, our beautiful region has most certainly taken a beating and the devastation caused in areas such as the Calder Valley, has been heartbreaking.
Blogging, Brexit and brilliant days out
I have to admit it, I always get nervous when I start to blog. Despite having absolutely no problem at all when it comes to chatting on the phone or indeed at the numerous events I attend, my nerves always kick in when the day arrives.
Taking a trip down memory lane
Those who know me well, may recall that many (very many, to be honest) years ago, I was one of the first females in the region to sell motor cars.
Hello 2020 - very pleased to meet you!
How delighted I am to welcome in a brand new year and the beginning of a whole new decade too. TopicUK celebrates its seventh year supporting the Yorkshire region and I am privileged to be part of a team which is passionate about business, supports entrepreneurs and fledging new starts, companies with a history spanning many years, educational providers and charities across the Yorkshire region too.
How humbled I am at my surprise news!
Yorkshire Choice Awards 2020 Those who know me well, will appreciate how humbled I was to receive the news recently that completely out of the blue, I had been nominated for a “Yorkshire Choice 2020” award in the category of “Local Fundraiser of the year”. In the last four years, The Yorkshire Choice Awards has grown from strength to strength, celebrating some outstanding people, organisations and businesses from across our great county, and raising money for local charities along the way.
And so the festive countdown begins
Where has the year gone? As I type my Blog from my office at home, I am surrounded by the boxes of tinsel and decorations that have been hoarded over the years. These were dragged out from the loft at 6am this morning, when I suddenly realised that although there are still four weeks to go until “the big day”, my calendar of events and meetings is full to brimming in the countdown to the festive break.
Mandy’s Blog: Happy 1st Anniversary to me!
Another “first” in my adventures with TopicUK November has already turned out to be a month to be remembered for a multitude of reasons, even though that as I write, we are not even half way through it! Firstly, we were delighted to distribute our final print edition of the year, graced on the front cover by the presence of one very talented Yorkshire writer and director Kay Mellor.
Mandy’s Blog: Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2019
In my last Blog I mentioned how privileged, and indeed excited I was to be able attend the ninth St. James’s Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards alongside our Group Editor Gill Laidler.
Mandy’s Blog: Why it is important to embrace CSR
Photo courtesy of Robling Photography Launching the 2019 Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards Back in the Spring, I was privileged to be asked to host the official launch party for the ninth St. James’s Place Charitable Foundation “Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards 2019”. This event is a truly unique one that combines honouring and recognising courageous young people in Yorkshire whilst raising funds for St. James’s Place Foundation.
Mandy’s Blog: Every day is a school day
As we count down to our next edition, which we aim to receive hot off the press on October 31st (a date which is a “hot topic” in politics at the moment and a subject matter I prefer not to touch on) we have been privileged to partner with Katrina Cliffe MCIM, founder of marketing, PR and social media agency KC Communications on the first (and no doubt not last) Huddersfield Business Week.
Mandy’s Blog: Edition 39 proves to be a “corker”
I simply cannot believe how quickly time flies by at TopicUK magazine and that our 39th edition has caused such a stir! All thanks to our fantastic photography friends Roth Read Photography the front cover image of Ryan Sidebottom, complete with his bedazzled miniature cricket bat (turn to page 27 to read more about his career spanning three decades) has proved to be a real hit and we have been “bowled over” by the positive feedback, and indeed requests for additional copies from businesses...
Mandy’s Blog: Time to bid farewell to another edition
It is almost time to “bid farewell” to edition 38, which was graced on the front cover by TV star “Julian Norton” and his four-legged friend, and eagerly await the delivery of the 39th TopicUK magazine – I cannot tell you how happy this makes me feel!. It may sound bizarre however I absolutely adore the smell of a freshly printed, high quality magazine and I will literally be beating down the printers doors as soon as I get the “heads up” to say that they are ready to collect!.
Mandy’s Blog: One man and his dog!
Since my last blog (apologies it has been a while, we have had several incredibly busy, yet rewarding weeks) our latest edition has been printed and over 10,000 copies distributed across the Yorkshire Region. The front cover has most certainly caused quite a stir to say the least, with Channel 5’s “The Yorkshire Vet” Julian Norton and his four legged friend.
Mandy’s Blog: Praise be for a cup of fine Yorkshire Tea!
I cannot thank our brilliant partners and associates enough for their outstanding support for our magazine, it has been a delight to catch up with many of them whilst tripping across the region this month. To say we have been busy is an understatement indeed, however a fine cup of Yorkshire Tea really did “touch the spot” whilst chatting with them about their ongoing successes, new appointments, events in the pipeline and award wins too.
Mandy’s Blog - TopicUK
Hosting the launch party at “The Yorkshire Children of Courage Awards” What a fantastic few weeks it has been for the magazine! Tripping across the Yorkshire Region meeting some very interesting new businesses, all of whom were keen to learn more about our B2B magazine. From Scarborough to York and Harrogate to Halifax, we’ve clocked up many miles on our quest to “spread the word” about our unique platform for businesses and organisations.
Mandy’s First Post
My words, I’ve been trusted to write posts on the TopicUK website and here is my very first… Where have the last five months gone? I can honestly say that since my appointment with the team, I have had the most rewarding time travelling across our beautiful county.
