Beginnings, 1875
Among the oldest colleges of North India, Government Mohindra College, Patiala, crossed the 150th milestone of its historic journey on March 30. I consider it serendipitous that I joined as principal soon after. Inevitably, I delved into some of the archival material to learn more about the institution that transforms you the moment you come face to face with its overwhelming architectural grandeur and sprawling greens.

South Asia Speaks is a recently formed writers’ collective that supports outstanding emerging talent from South Asia, given the precarious conditions of freedom of expression in the region. It offers annual fellowships to promising voices, including disabled writers. In 2022, the initiative was firmed up with a series of masterclasses for the enrolled fellows. Each session featured two authors of South Asian origin — as interviewer and interviewee.
Spice of Life: Odisha, a cultural oasis that has stood the test of time
To be honest, my impression of Odisha (previously Orissa, and traditionally Utkala) was largely based on the stirring poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra. Son of the soil, the Padma Shri awardee has etched out indelible images of the Kalinga war, power, hunger, the 1866 famine and the mutating regional social realities at large. So when I took off on an impromptu short trip to Bhubaneshwar, my expectations were pretty regular. I was delightfully embarrassed at my unawareness.

‘Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning of Life’ by Upamanyu Chatterjee: The curious case of Padre Lorenzo
Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning of Life by Upamanyu Chatterjee. Speaking Tiger. Pages 304. Rs 699 Maninder Sidhu Upamanyu Chatterjee’s new novel, ‘Lorenzo Searches for the Meaning of Life’, is a spiritual bonanza that spreads across cultures, countries and continents. It comes across as an engaging mix of fictional biography, the popular spiritual genre, and roman-e-clef, and hence a flavourful spread on a sacred plank.
Of courtesy, currency, and cultural churnings
Spice of Life: The millennials have reinvented the culture of courtesy with a fair amount of common sense. Digital apps help youngsters staying, travelling or organising events together to split expenses without too much fuss By keeping a track of, who owes who, how much, it helps in settling expenses squarely, saving time, effort and emotion. (Representative image) The most hilarious part of dining out with friends and family is the enthusiasm of the celebrants to foot the bill.
Ariel’s love’s labour lost: Learnings of a pet mother
Spice of Life: Little Ariel, schooled in the ‘ivy league’ of nature, deftly tore open the amniotic sac, licked the pup clean and bit off the umbilical cord Ariel delivered five pups in quick succession. When the sixth arrived, we knew something was amiss. She knew instantly that the pup was stillborn and rushed out of the kennel, holding the baby in her mouth.
The devil in the detail can be seriously funny
The cavalier and corona go hand in hand. Or that is what health organisations had us believe, and with good reasons. Let go of your guard only at the risk of getting cornered by the viral storm. Amid the paranoia of masks, physical distancing and sanitisers, it was the age-old ritual of handwashing that took the tussle between the perfunctory and thorough to a new high. Social media was flooded with infographics on the foolproof way to wash hands.

The Divinity Of Irrfan
bool(false) bool(false) It is really hard to choose one of Irrfan‘s characters that stayed with me. But the one who still is a mystery for me is Saajan Fernandes. The week The Lunchbox was released, I was excited. I was looking forward to that movie. I never read or watch anything about a movie I really want to watch. The Lunchbox was one of those movies. On Friday, I went to the theatre. There were about fifteen people in the hall.
