The Role of Platelet Dysfunctions in the Pathogenesis of the Hemostatic-Coagulant System Imbalances
1. Introduction Platelets are essential for hemostasis, and their dysfunction can determine the increase in the bleeding risk, particularly in hematological disorders and thrombocytopenia, but also it may lead to an increased thrombotic risk. However, bleeding risk is not solely determined by platelet count; platelet function also plays a crucial role. Platelets adhere to injured vessels via von Willebrand factor and collagen receptors, triggering activation, shape change, and granule release.
