Tommy Loughran should move up everyones list now
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by SuzieQ49, . Because of the recent changes that show Loughran to be the winner over gene tunney(which in fact should have been the case all along) this makes it nearly impossible to rank gene tunney over loughran at lightheavyweight.
Jersey Joe Walcott v Luis Firpo, Gene Tunney and Jack Sharkey
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by McGrain, . Walcott versus three of the best that Dempsey fought. How does Jersey Joe fare? Firpo - Walcott UD or late ko. Walcotts being KO'd quite a few times but Firpos surely too crude for him Sharkey - Walcott UD Tunney - tough 1, imagine the Charles-Walcott series with Tunney being Charles I'd make him a comfortable favorite in winning decisions against Sharkey and Firpo.
Jerry Halstead?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Russell, . Who is he, exactly? Ever do anything of note? Could he punch? Halstead was a heavyweight journeyman who fought during the 80's and 90's. He actually started out his career as a middleweight. He was Ok for a trial hoarse, but not really a contender type.

Would this be as important as Foreman's victory over Moorer?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by rekcutnevets, . What if??? What if Evander Holyfield got the chance to challenge for Maskaev's title, and won? It is not a crazy thought. Oleg fights like a big, less talented, Kostya Tszyu. That style seems in the realm of concurring for the old man. Would any of you give him the same credit Foreman got over Moorer? I wouldn't. I believe that when Moorer beat Holyfield, which was debatable, that Moorer was recognized as the top fighter in the division.
Chuvalo - What did he have going for him?
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Russell, . Besides his iron chin, that is... Great intangibles like heart and determination. Fitness. If you watch him against Patterson, etc., you will see that he had a lot of ability that he doesn't get credit for. Since he was never knocked down, people think of him often as just a punching bag, which is completely untrue. Bokaj, Fergy and Clinton like this.

Ezzard Charles - Does he...
Two of Ezzard's losses, the Bivins and Ray loss, came back to back once he had to basically completely stop boxing to enter the service. Not to mention he was outweighed 20 pounds by Ray, and he STILL came back to KO Ray and beat Bivins numeros times. In Ezzard's prime, he was literally nearly unstoppable. He eventually killed a guy in the ring and that plus age just took so much from him. Who's above him P4P out of curiousity, in your opinion...?
Old Holmes vs. Old Louis
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Muchmoore, . Who wins in a fight between the Holmes that got stopped by Tyson in 4 rounds and the Louis that was finished by Marciano in 8? I hear people give credit to Marciano for this win quite a lot, while people rarely give Tyson credit for it, saying Holmes was shot. They are about the same age and I'll post my pick later when I make up my mind on this.
Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by Sonny's jab, . Wills or Langford ? Who rates higher at heavyweight ? Wills should rate far above Langford at HW. His resume is amazing, on resume alone he rates above Dempsey. Arguably Wills was the best HW in the world from 1912-1926 P4P Langford rates higher Wills as my #15 Heavy; Langford #16. I think Langford. The series between them dose not tell the whole story because Langford was on the decline when it started.
This way and still be great? What I mean, is it possible for a great fighter to be stopped with one punch and still be great, or does it show a lack of heart, durability, and so on? Not being stopped with a volley of punches, but being out cold from a single one. A one punch knockout. How many truly great fighters have been knocked out clean with a single punch? Mike Tyson for example has always taken ungodly beatings, same thing with Louis vs. Schmeling I...
George "Scrap Iron" Johnson
Scrap Iron took Frazier apart that night. Frazier could not figure him out. When the decision was announced that Frazier won there was a riot. Chairs thrown, bottles tossed, people hurt, ambulances arrived. Years later, shortly after Frazier retired, he was asked at a news conference who his toughest opponent was. Every media guy in attendance knew he would say Ali but Frazier said "my toughest opponent was Scrap Iron Johnson years ago in LA".
Information on Albert "Turkey" Thompson?
ChrisPontius said: I've never seen him on film. Does anyone know what kind of style he had? He was obviously a big hitter. Has good wins over Godoy (decision, had an iron jaw), Valentino (TKO), Ray (TKO), Murray (TKO on cuts). Unlike a lot of punchers, he seems to retain his KO-percentage against better opposition. This suggests he had pretty good punching technique/delivery, instead of merely being heavy handed. He did lose a lot of fights and seems to be somewhat inconsistent.
How far could Cooper of gone?
Bert, that is. What did he lack that kept him from being more than he was? When he was on, the man was dangerous to literally anyone during the time he boxed. Holyfield, Moorer, DeWitt, McCall... Multiple fighters who've been in there with numerous huge punchers said Cooper hit them the hardest. I think some people forget Cooper fought at well under 200 pounds at the beginning of his career. How much did his weight issues keep him back?
