Lakenspøkelsene har historie tilbake til da man la likklede over de døde. Gjenferder og ånder går igjen i litteratur, kultur og folketro. En uforklarlig lyd, et likblekt ansikt som stirrer på deg i mørket, mystiske skygger, uhyrlige skrik i natten. På sitt eget merkverdige vis er spøkelser relevante også i vår moderne tid. I dette essayet skal jeg utforske spøkelsenes fascinerende verden litt nærmere.

William Turner kom til å spille en betydelig rolle i 1800-tallets landskapsmaleri. Romantikken er en periode innen vestlig kunsthistorie og regnes som begynnelsen på den moderne kunsten. Romantikken tidfestes fra ca. 1780 til 1850 og var en motreaksjon til nyklassisismen idealer om fornuft, klarhet og orden. Individet og det subjektive fikk med romantikken overordnet betydning og kunstnere utforsket sterke følelser og menneskesinnets irrasjonelle sider.
