Why egg donors need to be brought out of the shadows in surrogacy arrangements
At the recent Future Directions in Surrogacy Law conference, the risks that arise from marginalising the involvement of egg donors when discussing surrogacy arrangements were stark. The Law Commissions' 2019 consultation document – responses to which are currently being analysed – set the scene by making scant reference to egg donors, something we argued against at the time. Of course, a focus on legal parenthood inevitably concentrates, rightly, on intended parents (IPs) and surrogates.

It highlights what can happen in the absence of universally agreed, child-focused laws to regulate the growing world of surrogacy. As surrogacy is more costly than any other form of family building it is available only to those who can afford it.
Film Review: DNA testing, sperm donor anonymity and me
Film Review: DNA testing, sperm donor anonymity and me 2 March 2020 Appeared in BioNews 1037 Anyone who donated sperm, eggs or embryos in the UK prior to the 2005 law change, (as reported in BioNews 302) was promised life-long anonymity. Now in 2020, the probability of donors remaining anonymous is very much diminished, and continue to do so, as more and more people take direct-to-consumer DNA tests.
Donor-conceived people do benefit from being told about their conception
Professor Guido Pennings' provocatively entitled BioNews commentary 'Donor children do not benefit from being told about their conception' (see BioNews 900) purports to highlight the shortcomings of existing research supporting a pro-disclosure agenda, and castigates counsellors and researchers who advocate parental disclosure.
