Mother of five, insatiably curious, began journalism career answering Letters to the Editor (personally! by snail mail!) to TIME magazine in Manhattan back in the Cretaceous era, moved to Alexandria, VA with Time-Life Books to do text and photo research and writing for multivolume book series such as The Encyclopedia of Gardening, Home Repair, The Good Cook, World War II, American Indians, Epic of Flight, Seafarers, What Life Was Like, The Third Reich, Planet Earth, The Civil War, Apollo voyages, and more. Moved to National Geographic in 2001 as senior researcher for Traveler magazine, became chief researcher in 2004. I check facts. Helped found Nat Geo's first blog, Inside Traveler, which became Intelligent Travel, which attracted 3 million unique views in 2012. Discovered travel writer Andrew Evans, helped launch his career as Nat Geo's Digital Nomad in 2010. Spotted the Banff Crasher Squirrel among the user-submitted photos to Nat Geo's Your Shot in August 2009, promoted the photo to blogs and helped the Crasher Squirrel catapult to international meme-dom and the top of BuzzFeed's list of 35 Greatest Animal Photobombers of All Time. Wrote a monthly column for Nat Geo KIDS magazine called Weird But True for 7 years-- the content in my columns was made into Nat Geo's best-selling Weird But True Facts book series and the Weird But True app that chosen as App of the Week, New & Noteworthy, What’s Hot, and Staff Favorite by Apple.
