What was your first job as a journalist?
Answering letters to the editor at TIME magazine.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes indeed. Used a lot of White-out too. Have also used a Telex machine.
How is social media changing news?
Twitter finds breaking news before it hits news websites. The real-time tweets from Iran elections protests of 2009 blew my mind.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Harriet the Spy.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Reporting the truth, even when it's uncomfortable.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Don't know any funny news-related hashtags. I like @MrDavidWhitley's bio: "All views identical to those of everyone I've ever worked for."

What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Adobe K4. Google Cloud. Email and telephone. The amazing Nat Geo library, staffed with real librarians who know how to find everything.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Anybody who's interested in travel.
Why did you become a journalist?
Because my 4th-grade teacher praised a story I wrote.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
My high school was so small (25 in graduating class) we didn't have a newspaper, just chatted among ourselves.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I'm proudest of discovering writer Andrew Evans and convincing my boss Keith Bellows to send him on a 10,000-mile bus journey to Antarctica.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Learn to code.
