Column: Don’t measure an adaptation’s quality by its faithfulness to the original
Opinion Dec 1, 2025, 12:32 AM Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 “Frankenstein” film is not a faithful adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel. In fact, it ignores or contradicts crucial plot points of the original text and makes up entire narrative threads. And it’s also probably the best adaptation of a classic novel I’ve seen recently.

Opinion Nov 30, 2025, 11:55 PM Dear students of UNC-Chapel Hill, As the leader of a nomadic rat colony that resides in North Carolina, I have struggled these last few years to find my community a home. Knowing it was about vampires, an occult I’ve never cared for, I was apprehensive about picking it up. I was even more worried that it would taint my love for Schwab’s writing if it didn’t live up to my expectations. I greatly regret my apprehension now, however.
