Chosen [Not] To Be As our society continues to misrepresent and underestimate individuals with Down syndrome, this photographer brings light to their individuality and frustration through portraiture. This series is part of the Radical Beauty Project, an international photography project that aims to give people with Down syndrome their rightful place in the visual arts. The young women I worked with shared a strong will to succeed and to prove themselves.
Silent Voices: L(G)BT+ Iran
“Silent Voices” reflects on the vulnerable and dangerous circumstances of lesbian women in Iran. The series owes much to the brave LGBT+ women in the country, who—despite the risk to their personal safety—were willing to work with me in order to raise awareness about their lives in Iran. The courage of these strong women is truly inspirational. Under the Iranian penal code, homosexuality is a punishable crime.

My Stealthy Freedom—Women in Iran - Photographs and text by Marinka Masséus | LensCulture
This project reflects on the hijab, the much-hated symbol of oppression for the majority of Iranian women. Every day, Iranians—especially women—defy the regime through courageous, even if small, acts of defiance. They might wear their hijab too low, don colors that are too bright, go out with pants that are too tight or wear jackets that are a bit too short. Taken together, these signs of defiance are affecting change, allowing for a slow but visible evolution.
