Introduction Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO; 2013) as a global public health concern with a global prevalence rate in excess of 1% (Baxter et al., 2015; Christensen et al., 2016; Elsabbagh et al., 2012). Importantly, approximately 90% of individuals with ASD live in low/middle-income countries (LMICs; de Vries, 2016; Franz, Chambers, von Isenburg, & de Vries, 2017; Kieling et al., 2011).
