America and Israel: Plural Loyalties and the Patriotism of Shame
The recent passing of Carlo Ginzburg, the great Italian Jewish scholar who survived the war in hiding as a child, is an occasion for reflection. As a historian, I have long taken inspiration from Ginzburg’s historical method and his classic text, The Cheese and the Worms. Ginzburg was a master of “microhistory”—the art of taking a seemingly isolated, forgotten fragment of human experience and using it to uncover the hidden mental universe of an entire era.

The Blogs: Litmus Nation: Israel in America's Public Square
America’s arguments over Israel are a litmus test of the nation’s civic health. The Threshold of Dissent: A History of American Jewish Critics of Zionism
Review By – July 15, 2024 In this compact book, Marjorie Feld, a professor of history at Babson College, provides an overview of perspectives that are critical of Zionism. While billed as a history, Feld’s study covers only the first one hundred years of anti-Zionist critique, beginning in the 1880s (before the first official Zionist conference) and extending to the 1980s. A “coda” brings us to the post – October 7 crisis. Feld has a twofold thesis.
The Hebrew Teacher
Review By – March 18, 2024 According to many critics, Maya Arad is the most accomplished Hebrew-language writer living outside of Israel, and perhaps one of the best Israeli novelists of her generation. Throughout her eleven novels and books of short fiction, she has created deeply affecting and often wrenching portraits of the foibles of contemporary society, particularly those of middle-class families and academia.
