Goldengrove by Patrick McCabe
‘This is nothing less than the work of a genuine master, a must-read’ - Billy O'Callaghan ‘Wonderful, shape-shifting stuff’ - Colum McCann Chenevix Meredith, recently retired, is whiling away his time somewhere on the south coast of England, when his old colleague, Henry Plumm, is found dead.
- Storm in a Coffee Cup
Whither the literary salon? Once there was the Viennese coffeehouse, Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots; now we have Starbucks and Twitter. The setting of Mark Bowles’s intelligent debut novel is poised between these two poles. Café Amato is the favoured spot of Henry Nash, middle-aged academic philosopher and voluble grump, who is engaged in writing a ‘monograph’ about his late father, ‘a violent man, who brought with him his own violent weather’.
Voice male
Mark Bowles ON a dark December morning in Soho, a man views the streets through his grandfather’s welding goggles, which lend “an old-world, blood-orange tint”. This perspective suits the man, Henry Nash, who is at odds with many aspects of contemporary life. He is the prickly narrator in Mark Bowles’s compelling debut novel, All My Precious Madness. Written as a monologue, it is a voyage inside Henry’s head. An academic and author, he writes in a small Italian café in Berwick Street.
Women and the care of their hearts
Thirty years ago, the average cholesterol level for a middle-aged man was 235 mg/dL and the average cholesterol at the time of first myocardial infarction was 235. This has been attributed to hormonal and other factors.

Founded by several veterans of the wireless semiconductor industry, EcoATM created a business where there wasn’t one for recycling smartphones and other electronic devices.
Five tips for handling CSE in your school
Over the past few years public knowledge of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) has increased, not least due to several high profile cases in Oxford, Rotherham and Bradford. In many ways, these high-profile cases are just the tip of the iceberg, as many children and young people are not the victims of organised groups of adults, but by individuals whom they know and trust. Schools have a key role in educating young people in relation to CSE.
Tackling the issue of teenage abusive relationships
Teenage romantic relationships can often be short-lived but powerful, with adolescents experiencing high-intensity feelings and emotions. Sometimes, a young person’s lack of experience in adult relationships can result in abusive behaviour being overlooked or ignored should it occur. Domestic abuse is often viewed as an ‘adult’ issue – something that happens between two people who are, or have been, in an intimate relationship.
