Articles by Mark Cooney
Ryan McCarl believes that legal writing can be elegant. That’s no small goal. After all, McCarl is a working litigator. So his workaday quest for elegance comes up against the urgency of court deadlines, client demands, and bottom-line outcomes. In that milieu, elegance is elusive. You’ll forgive me, but that word elegant—its use in the title—fascinates me to near obsession. It was a shrewd and mildly audacious choice. Elegant connotes tasteful restraint.
The Case for Effective Legal Writing: Court Opinions, Commentary, and Exercises
Welcome to a book that brings the courthouse to the legal writing classroom. The Case for Effective Legal Writing is the first of its kind, a text that connects writing technique to real-world consequences. In its pages, you'll find dozens of court cases in which writing technique determined the outcome or was otherwise significant—cases proving that the finer points of writing mechanics and legal style aren't trivial or mere fancies of personal taste.

However, some have expanded the term “violence” to include non-force (e.g., speech). Conversely, others have actively avoided the “violence” label to describe clear instances of force (e.g., property destruction).

Spotted in Ely has been a very keen supporter of this amazing lady for a long time. The Foodbank in Ely has now been running for 7 years and without this incredibly compassionate lady, it wouldn’t be in the position it is today, helping hundreds of people every month. The nomination came from Ashley Handscombe and read “Most Compassionate.
