What was your first job as a journalist?

I covered my local high school basketball team for the website kchoopscoop.com. I got paid like $100 the whole year.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

You can make other people happy, whether it's through a fun blog post or a well-researched investigative project that helps change policy.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Word, Excel, Twitter, Photoshop, several CMS types.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter

Why did you become a journalist?

At first, I wanted to write. Now I see it as a way to reach others and do my part to provide them entertainment and relevant information.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My story from 2011 about the danger of "two-a-day" football practices in Texas. It led to an important policy change.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Go with your gut. Leave your comfort zone if it feels like the right choice.
