Victory! CLC Once Again Defends Fair Maps in Utah
Utahns have been fighting for fair maps in Utah for nearly a decade and a ruling today once again has solidified that voters in the state will vote under a fair map this year. After a momentous victory in a state court case where the judge ruled in favor of a map that our clients, the League of Women Voters of Utah (LWVUT) and Mormon Women for Ethical Government (MWEG) proposed, anti-voter advocates filed a federal court case against implementation of the new, fair map.
Victory! Utahns Finally Secure a Fair Congressional Map for 2026
After nearly a decade-long battle for a fair congressional district map, Utahns have successfully secured the opportunity for fair representation ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. Utahns have been fighting since at least 2018 for fair voting maps and fair representation. Every time Utah voters score a victory in this fight, state lawmakers erect new hurdles in an attempt to maintain their ability to gerrymander the state’s congressional map at the expense of Utahns.
Utahns Score Huge Victory Voiding Amendment D
Utah voters scored a big victory when a state court ruled in their favor today. Holding that the people have the right to truthful ballot language and proper notice for proposed constitutional amendments, the court officially voided Constitutional Amendment D — an amendment that would have allowed the Legislature to amend or repeal citizen-passed ballot initiatives with virtually no limitation.
Utah’s November Ballot will Deceive Voters about the Meaning of Amendment D
Campaign Legal Center is representing a bipartisan group of voters who are asking a district court to remove Constitutional Amendment D from Utahns’ ballots this November. The ballot summary that voters would see when casting their votes misleads the voters about the effect of the Amendment, and thus violates the Utah Constitution. Amendment D is designed to eliminate voters’ fundamental constitutional right to reform their government through ballot initiatives.
CLC, Utahns Score Huge Victory in the Fight for Fair Maps
Utah voters got a big win in the fight for fair voting maps today after the state Supreme Court ruled that the state Legislature most likely broke the law when they gutted Prop 4, a citizen-led initiative that set up the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission and banned partisan gerrymandering.
Ohio Voters Could End Gerrymandering This November
Voters should be the ones to choose their leaders, not the other way around. While that idea may seem obvious, there are many states — including Ohio — where the people in charge of drawing voting maps are the politicians who stand to benefit most from manipulating those maps. When politicians manipulate how voting maps are drawn to benefit themselves or their party, that’s called gerrymandering.
Holloway, et al. v. City of Virginia Beach
Virginia Beach’s At-Large Election System The 11-member City Council is the governing body for the City of Virginia Beach. The Mayor and the other 10 councilmembers are elected at-large to four-year staggered terms. Seven of the 11 councilmembers are required to be residents of the seven districts in Virginia Beach (Bayside, Beach, Centerville, Kempsville, Lynnhaven, Princess Anne, and Rose Hall), but are nonetheless elected at-large.
Redistricting
CLC defends fair maps in court and champions fair redistricting practices like citizen-led independent redistricting commissions and an end to partisan gerrymandering because voters should be the ones to choose their politicians, not the other way around. CLC also fights maps that dilute Black and brown voting power and advocates for strong legal protections for Black, Asian, Native and Latino or Hispanic voters so every vote counts equally, and every voice is heard.
CLC Wins Voting Rights Act Case in Virginia Beach
On March 31, 2021, a federal court declared Virginia Beach, Virginia’s method of conducting elections illegal because it dilutes the voting power of the minority community. Campaign Legal Center (CLC) served as counsel for plaintiffs Latasha Holloway and Georgia Allen and proved at trial that the election system for city council did not comply with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). The system denied communities of color the opportunity to elect representatives of their choice.
President Biden Reverses Trump Census Policy, Ensuring Every Person Will Count
In his first day in office, President Biden took executive action to reverse the Trump administration’s unlawful policy of excluding undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census apportionment count. His action restores America’s commitment to equal representation and honors the U.S. Constitution’s clear mandate to count all people residing in the United States, regardless of immigration status.
Lessons From 2020: Strengthening Elections To Protect Our Democracy
A record 160 million Americans voted in the 2020 general election and made their voices heard, a remarkable achievement during a year defined by overlapping challenges. President Trump used his megaphone to try and delegitimize election results while a viral pandemic spread like wildfire through the country.
Perspective | Trump’s call is still a crime, even if he believes his own fraud fantasies
President Trump’s call demanding that Georgia officials “find 11,780 votes” and reverse the election results in the state was his most brazen abuse of power yet. If Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger didn’t go along with Trump’s scheme and “recalculate” the vote, the president warned, “it’s going to be very costly in many ways,” threatening that Georgia authorities were committing a “criminal offense” by not endorsing Trump’s false voter fraud claims.
Trump Abused Power and Broke Laws With Pressure to Falsify Election Results
For the first time, we have heard with our own ears a president attempting to procure false election results. On Jan.
