Responsible AI: How Philanthropy Can (and Should) Support the Movement
2023 is the year AI ate the internet, according to the New Yorker and anyone not living under a rock. AI has so deeply penetrated our society that we can’t ignore the existential questions it raises, from the future of work to ethical dilemmas to questions about whether it will exacerbate bias and inequity or be used for the good of civil society.
Impact investing in 2023: doom and gloom or silver linings?
It is certainly not an easy time for social ventures and their investors. Just out of the Covid-19 crisis, many have been caught off guard by the war in Ukraine and its now well-known implications for people, the planet and the economy. Cash is again king for many social entrepreneurs, who, just a few months ago, had ambitious growth plans. Now, they need to pivot their business models and focus on getting profitable – again.
Government energy plan leaves UK social enterprises on “cliff edge”, social economy leaders warn
The UK government’s energy support package leaves social enterprises on a “cliff edge” and at risk of closure, social economy leaders have warned. The new prime minister, Liz Truss, on Thursday announced that her government would protect individuals from spiralling energy energy costs for the next two years, capping prices so the energy bill of an average household would not exceed £2,500 – under the scheme. Average unit prices will be limited to 34.0p/kWh for electricity and 10.3p/kWh for gas.
‘Clear signs of strain’ as UK social enterprises cushion economic blow
Almost one third of UK social enterprises have increased staff pay in response to the cost of living crisis, according to new data from Social Enterprise UK (SEUK), while one in six has taken other measures to support staff. Nearly one third are making no changes in response to the crisis. The figures are published today in the Social Enterprise Barometer, a regular survey that aims to give a snapshot of the sector’s financial health and growth.
Staying afloat: five social enterprises helping Britons through the cost of living crisis
Soaring energy costs, increasing food insecurity and in-work poverty, a deepening housing crisis, inflation: the future looks pretty bleak. UK charities have warned of a national emergency, saying government pledges of support so far will be insufficient to help those on low incomes get through the winter. And the National Institute for Economic and Social Research has said that economic destitution could hit a further 250,000 households in 2023.
Cost of living crisis: what your business can do to help
Business leaders have a fundamental duty to help their employees, customers and suppliers to get through the coming months. It makes good business sense too, says Social Value Portal's Guy Battle. Three ways to get started. Many countries are reporting significant increases in the cost of food, housing and fuel, leading to a cost of living crisis that will have far-reaching consequences – not least for those already in a vulnerable position.
Lottery Fund, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation join taskforce to scale up grants for enterprise
A group of influential UK funders has joined forces to help social enterprises and charities increase their earned income through grants. Members of the new Enterprise Grants Taskforce, announced yesterday, include the National Lottery Community Fund, Power to Change, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and the Association of Charitable Foundations (ACF).
Five ways funders can support charities and social enterprises through the cost-of-living crisis
The cost-of-living crisis is really starting to bite. With food, energy and fuel bills rapidly rising, we know more people are likely to rely on the services of charities – following already heightened demand during the Covid-19 pandemic. Yet, charities and social businesses are having to do more with fewer financial resources. The findings of our UK Giving report 2022 – the largest study of household giving behaviour in the UK – already showed that fewer people are giving to charity overall.
The University of North Korea: An Insider’s Account
Having worked as a university professor in the United States for over 30 years, I have had more than my share of run-ins with the politically correct campus crackpots. Evidently, my holding a number of lefty political views confers incomplete immunity to their predations. I would like to share my insights about this insanity with outsiders to academia. To begin with, the real hellions in the woke mob generally come from privileged backgrounds.
How Akron, Ohio is expanding economic opportunity by investing in neighborhood business districts
It’s no secret that the COVID-19 pandemic is disproportionately impacting small businesses, particularly those in historically disinvested commercial corridors. The number of small businesses that have permanently closed their doors is now well into the six figures, and federal aid through the CARES Act proved cumbersome and rife with race- and place-based inequities.
