Andy Burnham - new messiah or naughty boy?
I worked with Andy Burnham as a member of the Greater Manchester Combined Authority for three years, so am perhaps uniquely placed to offer a personal perspective on what his super-charged run for No.10 means for us Liberal Democrats. As leader of Stockport Council 2022-2025, I was one of ten council leaders (nine Labour and me!) who formed Burnham’s cabinet and met regularly under his chairmanship, arguably putting me in a good position to judge what makes him tick.
Institutional neutrality or institutionalized silencing?
The partial ceasefire in Gaza offers an opportunity to reflect on how universities have responded to a level of student activism not seen since the protests against apartheid South Africa in the 1980s.
Faketoshi: Fraud, Lies and the Battle for Bitcoin's Soul, Volume 1
In 2011, two years after the launch of Bitcoin, its pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, quietly departed the scene. Many thought Satoshi was gone for good, but in 2016, he returned, telling a shocking story: far from leaving on his terms, he had been forced out, and now he was back to reclaim what was rightfully his. Except this wasn’t Satoshi Nakamoto. This was an Australian IT security consultant called Craig Wright. And he was a complete fraud.
Mediapart aimed at investigative reporters. USAID took the hit.
The leading French news outlet Mediapart’s “revelations” concerning the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project's "hidden" links to the U.S. government were published after eight years of stories that made similar allegations in Russian state-linked media about the OCCRP. Mediapart’s story proceeded from a groundless premise of concealment, omitted key evidence and included erroneous “facts”.
From Audience to Community: An Alternative Future for Watchdog Journalism
There were approximately 100 definitions of community the last time I looked, and the only thing they had in common was that they referred to human beings. “Ah,” commented a colleague. “So we leave chimpanzees out?” For our purposes today, yes. Chimpanzees are beautiful animals, but they do not form communities that support independent media. Humans do.
How Russia bombed and bought Syria's healthcare sector
In-depth: The Assad ally who helped to destroy Syria's healthcare sector is now a crucial investor in its future. Looking at Syria today, it is difficult to believe that in 2009 its flourishing pharmaceuticals industry supplied over 90 percent of the country’s needs and exported its products regionally and globally. Likewise, the country’s clinics, notably for plastic surgery, had become a destination for patients from abroad seeking high-quality services at a low price, including many Russians.

Lil Mariko | English | Metal Magazine
Lil Mariko’s fame was an accident. As is the case with many of our generation’s favourite artists, it all started with a viral video uploaded as a joke. Lil Mariko had been dating Jared Soule (aka Full Tac) and out of boredom the two cooked up Where’s my Juul?? which violently confronts the ostensible thief of Mariko’s Juul.
Inside Anna Delvey's "Club House Arrest"
As I arrived at the Rick Owens show, I pulled up to a sea of Rick fans dressed in dystopian headpieces waiting outside. In that moment, I saw more Kiss boots than I think I will in my entire life. I ran into my friend Kyle who owns Middleman Store, a fantastic LA-based company specializing in vintage designer and rare archival pieces, often worn by rappers like Playboi Carti and Lil Uzi.

Celebrations and Anniversaries
I was speaking with a colleague the other day who was celebrating a significant wedding anniversary. For fun we started looking up the modern vs. traditional anniversary gifts. As I’m sure you can imagine, they vary! But as much as we may like the gift to celebrate the moment, it is the sentiment that is really important. Milestones and anniversaries should be fun. In our world, law firms have special histories that should be celebrated. Milestones also offer an opportunity to look forward.

Tip: Learn how to write better headlines
Headlines are key in grabbing people's attention and while they're important in print, they're crucial online - the first few words can either hook readers or prevent them from clicking to read the article. Choosing the right one can be nearly as important as finding a good story, but of course that doesn't mean you should write sensational or inaccurate headlines just to draw people in.
How Strategic Alliances Can Strengthen Investigative Journalism
Collaborations between journalists and NGOs forge new avenues for mutual value creation – and social impact. Once an American specialty, investigative journalism has become a global movement – and as it expands, it is continuously short on resources. The decline of the mainstream news industry is a major reason. But while the media downsized, NGOs were growing fast and undertaking investigative projects of their own.
Would anyone marry an investigative reporter?
The question came up, so far as I know for the first time in print anywhere, in an interview with Iravaban.net, a major force for the rule of law in Armenia. They also wanted to know how to stay safe while doing a difficult job, and how to get it done. Along the way we laid out the most detailed account to date of how the story-based inquiry method, which is now available in over a dozen major and minor languages, came to be.

The Organized Crime and Corruption Project (OCCRP) is working with Transparency International, and this spring various Greenpeace...

The Morality of #metoo
The forced resignation of Patrick Brown as leader of the Ontario Conservatives raises concerns of fairness and due process – for him and for the women accusing him. Christie Blatchford has castigated the party and other public officials for abandoning the “presumption of innocence”, and has highlighted the wrong of ruining a man’s reputation based on anonymous allegations. Others agree.

How True News Will Beat Fake News
A wave of community-based media is taking audience and influence from the mainstream. The conventional wisdom following Donald Trump’s election is that the media campaigned against him, and Trump defeated them. Indeed, he won the Electoral College vote, the one that counts, despite losing the popular vote, and despite the hostility of nearly the totality of America’s mainstream media. But to say “The Media lost” implies that mainstream media (MSM) are the only ones that can sway opinion and action.
Mainstream Media’s Way Forward
The “post-truth” era is a myth – but journalists must accept that pre-Trump rules no longer apply. The conventional wisdom following Donald Trump’s election is that the media campaigned against him, and Trump defeated them. Indeed, he won the Electoral College vote, the one that counts, despite losing the popular vote, and despite the hostility of nearly the totality of America’s mainstream media.
