What was your first job as a journalist?
Editor of UK regional business title, Business North East in 1995. It was a boom time for regional business magazines.
How is social media changing news?
It has brought forward a new generation of journalists who use social media tactics to reach wider audiences, beyond print.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Always by email to marklanebusiness@gmail.com. No calls.
What's your favorite social network?
I find Twitter fascinating and have built up more than 62K followers across my two main accounts. I also have 24,000 followers on LinkedIn.
Who do you wish followed you?
Some of the Blackadder greats such as Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie. Some of the actors, including Tony Robinson, follow me.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
From recent articles, a profile piece on Dominik Prousek, executive director of Austria's number one coffee shop and pastry chain, Aïda.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Identify the best writers in the field you are writing about and read as much of their content as you can.
When's the best time to pitch you?
Any time.
What's your favorite drink?
I'm a Diet Coke addict and can't write without it!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
On my iPhone. I run the no.1 page about the comedy 'Blackadder' on Twitter (@pitchblacksteed), so much of my spare time is spent on that.
