Emerson releases latest asset management software version
Emerson is helping reliability teams eliminate data silos and expand their capabilities with the release of AMS Machine Works version 1.8. This latest software update unites all modern AMS condition monitoring hardware data under a single platform to help organizations simplify management and increase cybersecurity of their reliability programs in a wide range of process industries, including mining, metals, minerals, oil and gas, chemical, life sciences, water, power and utilities, pulp and...
Hecla taps Krcmarov for president, CEO
Hecla Mining Company has appointed Rob Krcmarov, a 30-plus-year veteran of mining and former Barrick executive, as the company’s new president and chief executive officer, effective November 7. Krcmarov, who will also join Hecla’s board of directors, succeeds Catherine (Cassie) Boggs, who had served as interim president and CEO since May 22 of this year and will remain as chair of the board.
Battery-electric truck arrives at Newmont’s Colorado mine
Newmont Corporation has commissioned its first battery-electric large mining truck – dubbed the Early Learner Cat 793 XE – at the Cripple Creek and Victor (CC&V) mine in Teller County in Colorado. “The arrival of the Early Learner Cat 793 XE underscores our ongoing commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our business,” said Natascha Viljoen, Chief Operating Officer at Newmont.
AEM marks largest-ever membership
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) has surpassed a new record in its membership tally, surpassing 1,000 members, for the first time in its 125-year history. The group said it has seen 109 member companies join in 2024, and 22 in September alone. Its previous membership record that was set almost one year ago; it also has achieved an above-average member retention rate of 92%.
How Valve Solutions Improve Tailings Disposal and Water Management
By Steve Brewer & Mark Nymeyer, Emerson This is the second article in a two-part series explaining how innovative valve solutions can be used to improve mining operations. The first article, “How advanced control valves, regulators and relief valves improve mining operations,” covered valve solutions for crushing/grinding/ball mills, digestion/autoclaves, flotation/thickening, and leaching/solvent extraction processes.
Position transmitters improve critical isolation valve reliability
Automated isolation on/off valves are found throughout most process plants, where they are used to arrest reactant flows, isolate and protect equipment, divert process media and perform other functions. Many of these tasks are paramount for process operations, and some are part of the safety shutdown systems that protect plant personnel and equipment. Isolation valves are typically outfitted with open and closed limit switches to provide valve position feedback.
Data-driven manufacturing: Using operational analytics tools to improve consistency and drive profitability
One of the biggest challenges facing process manufacturers today is achieving consistent performance across different production lines, facilities and geographies. Inconsistent performance can lead to quality issues, higher costs and missed delivery targets, all of which can undermine profitability and customer satisfaction. The good news is that operational analytics tools can help address this challenge.
Control valve selection for semiconductor ultrapure water applications
Since its discovery in 1959, the silicon chip has faced an unceasing drive to improve computing speed through component minimization. As transistors shrink to nanoscale sizes, the purity of the water required to produce these chips must achieve near perfect conditions. Achieving and maintaining these levels of purity requires control valves with very specific features.
PLANNING AN UNDERGROUND TRANSITION
Moving from open pit to underground operations is fraught with complications. North American Mining spoke to three experts about the considerations and risks involved. By Jonathan Rowland A majority of mining operations begin life as open pits; however, as mining progresses, ore reserves may be proved to extend to greater depths than originally anticipated.
Valve Stem Sealing Best Practices
I just saw a post, Article: Proper Valve Stem Sealing Best Practices, in the Valves Forum in the Valves, Actuators & Regulators group in the Emerson Exchange 365 community. The post by Emerson’s Mark Nymeyer recaps an Intech article by Lisa Miller, Proper Valve Stem Sealing Best Practices. Here is an excerpt of the opening of the post, and I invite you to read the full summary as well as Lisa’s article.
Standards
All on/off isolation valve standards are not created equal and cannot be applied unilaterally to all valves. This article references two types of valves: 1. Control valves, which are defined as manipulating a flowing fluid to keep process variables as close as possible to the desired set point; and 2. Isolation or shutoff valves, which have one primary function—to provide tight shutoff to ensure fluids don’t pass downstream.
