Assessing the relationship between body mass index and influenza-like illness risk and symptom severity among military health system beneficiaries vaccinated against influenza: a pooled prospective cohort study from a randomized trial
Abstract Introduction: Obesity prevalence is rising globally and associated with increased influenza mortality. The relationship between obesity and influenza-like-illness (ILI) incidence and symptom severity is less clear. Materials and methods: US Military Health System (MHS) beneficiaries enrolled in a randomized influenza vaccine trial received one of three influenza vaccines and were followed for ILI via weekly surveys throughout one influenza season.

Impact and limitations of 3D computational modelling in transcatheter mitral valve replacement—a two-centre Dutch experience - Netherlands Heart Journal
Abstract Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative to mitral valve surgery for patients at high or prohibitive operative risk. Prospective studies reported favourable outcomes in patients with annulus calcification (valve-in-mitral annulus calcification; ViMAC), failed annuloplasty ring (mitral valve-in-ring; MViR), and bioprosthetic mitral valve dysfunction (mitral valve-in-valve; MViV).
Demographics and outcomes of patients younger than 75 years undergoing aortic valve interventions in Rotterdam - Netherlands Heart Journal
Abstract Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is considered a safe and effective alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) for elderly patients across the operative risk spectrum. In the Netherlands, TAVI is reimbursed only for patients with a high operative risk. Despite this, one fifth of TAVI patients are < 75 years of age. We aim to compare patient characteristics and outcomes of TAVI and SAVR patients < 75 years.

HQAlign: Aligning nanopore reads for SV detection using current-level modeling
Detection of structural variants (SV) from the alignment of sample DNA reads to the reference genome is an important problem in understanding human diseases. Long reads that can span repeat regions, along with an accurate alignment of these long reads play an important role in identifying novel SVs. Long read sequencers such as nanopore sequencing can address this problem by providing very long reads but with high error rates, making accurate alignment challenging.
vamos: variable-number tandem repeats annotation using efficient motif sets - Genome Biology
Generating an original motif set We used a total of 148 haplotype-resolved assemblies covering nonredundant samples from the HGSVC (N = 58) and HPRC (N = 90) projects to build a catalog of VNTR motifs. The motif sets were calculated using sequences orthologous to 692,882 VNTR loci defined by the simple repeat track in GRCh38 [36]. Since the GRCh38 VNTR annotations may be missing VNTR annotations due to misassembly and collapsed repeats, we also ran TRF on the 148 assemblies.
The Learning Crisis in Philippine Education: An Overview
Written for the Second Congressional Commission on Education and based on existing research, this Policy Note provides an overview of the major issues confronting the Philippine education system. Looking at the poor learner outcomes and their contributing factors, the authors raise the urgency of addressing challenges in early childhood education, basic education, technical and vocational education, and higher education.
When Students Fail to Learn: Getting Education Governance and Finance Policies Right
Drawing from existing research, this Policy Note emphasizes the critical need for efficient and inclusive reforms in the Philippine education sector to prevent its decline. It recommends a shift in focus from the massification of low-quality education toward prioritizing the enhancement of cognitive and noncognitive competencies. To achieve this, the government is urged to increase its investment in education and training to match the achievements of its aspirational peers.

A haplotype-resolved genome assembly of the Nile rat facilitates exploration of the genetic basis of diabetes - BMC Biology
Nile rat tissue collection Spleen, brain, and testis tissue were collected from a 21-week-old male Nile rat (T564M) in the laboratory colony of Huishi Toh and James Thomson at University of California, Santa Barbara. The spleen was used for genome sequencing, whereas the brain and testis were used for transcriptome analysis. These tissue samples were flash frozen in liquid nitrogen immediately after dissection.
Suggestions for a New Clinical Classification Approach to Panniculitis Based on a Mayo Clinic Experience of 207 Cases - American Journal of Clinical Dermatology
Abstract Background Panniculitis, or inflammation of adipose tissue, includes a heterogeneous group of disorders with similar morphologic presentations. Currently, panniculitides are classified based on histopathologic findings only. Objective In this retrospective study of 207 cases of biopsy-proven panniculitis over 20 years at Mayo Clinic, we aimed to propose a new classification that integrates the clinical morphologic features with the histopathology of panniculitis.
Effects of step frequency during running on the magnitude and symmetry of ground reaction forces in individuals with a transfemoral amputation - Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation
Journal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation volume 19, Article number: 33 (2022) Cite this article Abstract Background Individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputation are prone to developing health conditions such as knee osteoarthritis, caused by additional loading on the intact limb. Such individuals who can run again may be at higher risk due to higher ground reaction forces (GRFs) as well as asymmetric gait patterns.
Structural insights into the Venus flytrap mechanosensitive ion channel Flycatcher1 - Nature Communications
Abstract Flycatcher1 (FLYC1), a MscS homolog, has recently been identified as a candidate mechanosensitive (MS) ion channel involved in Venus flytrap prey recognition. FLYC1 is a larger protein and its sequence diverges from previously studied MscS homologs, suggesting it has unique structural features that contribute to its function. Here, we characterize FLYC1 by cryo-electron microscopy, molecular dynamics simulations, and electrophysiology.

Ryan’s ‘inner city’ comments sparking backlash
Washington (CNN) - Rep. Paul Ryan is receiving some serious heat for comments he made on a conservative radio program where the Republican from Wisconsin said there’s “a real culture problem” in inner cities and pointed to the work of a controversial author who believes black people are less intelligent than whites.
