Multi-population GWAS meta-analysis identifies bladder cancer susceptibility loci and highlights genetic regulation of smoking-related risk
Abstract Bladder cancer is the ninth most common cancer worldwide, caused by genetic and environmental risk factors. Here, we report the findings of a multi-population meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies, including 32,470 individuals with and 1,753,462 without bladder cancer. We identify 70 independent risk loci, of which 43 are novel. Using a 70-marker polygenic risk score (HR = 1.63 per standard deviation), we increase the area under the curve from 0.71 (baseline risk model) to 0.75.
Epstein-Barr virus antibodies and risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma: a pooled analysis of four prospective cohorts
Abstract Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) are among the most common cancers in the US, yet their etiology is mostly unknown. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a known driver of rare NHLs, but its role in common subtypes is unclear.
Ultra-processed food intake and risk of renal cell carcinoma in the NIH-AARP Diet and health study: a prospective cohort analysis
Keywords Ultra-processed foods Renal cell carcinoma Kidney cancer Cancer incidence Cohort study Evidence before this study We searched PubMed on May 12, 2026, for cohort and case–control studies evaluating associations between ultra-processed foods (UPF) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The following search terms used were: (“ultra-processed food” OR “ultraprocessed food” OR “food processing”) AND (“renal cell carcinoma” OR “kidney cancer”). Our search identified three prospective studies.
Genetic landscape and functional exploration of kidney cancer predisposition in cross-ancestral populations

Invited Perspective: How Far Have We Come? Revisiting a 2009 Report on Occupational Cancer Research Recommendations
Chemicals, metals, dusts, and physical agents encountered in the workplace make up a substantial proportion of the agents classified as human carcinogens by hazard identification programs such as the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s (IARC) Monographs series and the U.S. National Toxicology Program’s Report on Carcinogens (RoC).1,2 Because the establishment of carcinogenicity for an agent has important regulatory implications, there is great value in identifying data gaps and...
A Nested Case–Control Study of Serum Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Testicular Germ Cell Tumors among U.S. Air Force Servicemen | Environmental Health Perspectives | Vol. 131, No. 7
Published:CID: 077007https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP12603Cited by:1 Abstract Background: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a component of firefighting foams used at military installations. Although high PFAS exposures have been related to cancer risks among civilian populations, the effects for military personnel are unclear. Objectives: We investigated associations between serum PFAS concentrations and testicular germ cell tumors (TGCT) among U.S. Air Force servicemen.
Improve the model of disease subtype heterogeneity by leveraging external summary data
3.3 Real data application: The NHL study NHL is the most common hematological malignancy with many subtypes with distinct molecular and clinical features. It has been hypothesized that various NHL subtypes and other lymphoid malignancies might share some degree of genetic susceptibility. Recently, [39] used eight GWAS within the InterLymph Consortium to study the genetic heritability in four major NHL subtypes, including CLL, DLBCL, FL, and MZL.

Accountex 2019
Brought to you by Thomson Reuters 10th May 2019 We can safely say we’re now fully recovered from another fantastic Accountex event at London’s Excel. It hosted over 200 seminars over two days, many of which were so popular it was standing-room only. Thousands of accountants took the time to visit the vast array of vendors and sessions to arm themselves with plenty of tech-talk (and freebies!) to return to the office with.

On Compliance podcast - Making Tax Digital Pilot goes live
This month’s podcast focuses on HMRC's opening up of the Making Tax Digital pilot from the perspective of two experts who know their stuff when it comes to tax compliance – Rebecca Cave, editor of AccountingWEB and Mark Purdue, MTD guru and product manager for tax products at Thomson Reuters. Making sense of Making Tax Digital is a seemingly never-ending feat, with the latest revelation being the new public pilot launched by HMRC which may ramp up some interest in the new digital tax process.
Drinking alcohol is associated with variation in the human oral microbiome in a large study of American adults
In this first large comprehensive human study, we observed that overall microbiome community composition in the oral cavity differed by drinking level, with consistent results across two independent cohorts and after exclusion of current smokers. Drinkers had decreased abundance of order Lactobacillales, the major order in the Firmicutes phylum. Other taxa, some of which are potentially pathogenic, were enriched with higher alcohol consumption.
ACCA Study Tips: F2’s, F3’s and Fry-Ups
‘Tis the season to be studying! We ask Mark Purdue, product manager for tax products, about his recent experience of ACCA exams. Mark is studying alongside his full-time job here at Thomson Reuters. How did you fit studying around your work-life balance? Studying for something like ACCA is certainly a huge commitment, over a long period of time. A usual day for me involves attending a lot of meetings, so my calendar fills up quickly. I therefore ‘book out’ my lunch break to ensure I take it.
10 steps you should take to prepare for Making Tax Digital
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is still hitting the headlines and, despite the government’s removal of MTD clauses from the Finance Bill and the upcoming general election, the pilot program is now underway. Whilst there are still many unanswered questions, it’s still too early to tell whether the pace of HMRC’s digital transformation will change. Ahead of the Finance Bill announcement, Thomson Reuters surveyed 564 accountants and found that the majority (69%) are taking steps to prepare for MTD.
The transition to MTD to cost more for small businesses than estimated
HMRC is continuing to field questions regarding the potential cost of Making Tax Digital (MTD) to businesses, especially small businesses. The Government has estimated the transitional cost of MTD will be £280 per business – much lower than the estimate given by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) at a cost of £2,770 per year per business.
Occupational exposure to chlorinated solvents and kidney cancer: a case-control study
Objectives Trichloroethylene, a chlorinated solvent widely used for metal degreasing, is classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a kidney carcinogen. Other chlorinated solvents are suspected carcinogens, most notably the cleaning solvent perchloroethylene, although it is unclear whether they are associated with kidney cancer.
Making Tax Digital: the profession awaits some key details
The end of the reporting year on January 31 saw HMRC issue its response to the recent ‘Making Tax Digital’ – or MTD – consultations focusing on: According to HMRC, there was widespread support for the move to a digital tax system, with concerns centred around the pace of change and the capability of the smallest businesses and those who struggle with digital technology to adapt.
Treasury Select Committee - Initial Report on MTD
The much awaited Treasury Select Committee report on Making Tax Digital (MTD) was published last week, and it makes interesting reading.
Small businesses below the VAT threshold should be excluded from MTD
Mark Purdue tax product manager at Thomson Reuters discusses the key implications of the Autumn Statement for accountants. If the accountancy profession was hoping for some reassurance about the imminent arrival of ‘Making Tax Digital’ – or ‘MTD’ – in last week’s Autumn Statement from Chancellor Philip Hammond, it was sorely disappointed.
Turn Making Tax Digital to your advantage
The consultation stage for HMRC’s ambitious ‘Making Tax Digital’ (MTD) initiative ended on 7 November 2016. You could assume then, that the next stage is to await the outcome of this. But the fact is, despite industry concerns and calls for delay, MTD is coming and is in fact already happening if you take into account that more than 3.5 million individuals have already accessed their Personal Tax Account.
