Mark Rayner is a science editor and former experimental particle physicist, specialising in the communication of cutting-edge research in fundamental physics. He is currently Editor of CERN Courier, the global magazine for particle physicists, accelerator scientists, and policymakers engaged in frontier science.
Before moving into science journalism, Mark earned a doctorate in particle physics from the University of Oxford, where his research focused on muon-beam cooling. He went on to work on neutrino physics and detector development as part of international collaborations including the T2K experiment in Japan. His hands-on experience with large-scale research infrastructures brings deep technical understanding to his editorial work.
He also spent several years leading insights work at the Centre for the New Economy and Society at the World Economic Forum, adding depth to his reporting on policymaking and the socioeconomic impact of Big Science.
