Have you ever used a typewriter?
I took a typing class in high school where our teacher unironically taught us the 'rhythm method' which was where we should type with a beat.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Edison Carter of Network XXIII on the prescient, but short-lived, sci-fi TV series 'Max Headroom.' He was tenacious and had principles.
What's your favorite social network?
Instagram, because I secretly want to be a photographer.
Why did you become a journalist?
I thought it would pay better than creative writing. Now, I'm not so sure.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Don't get too protective of the words you write when an editor changes them.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
When working as a travel writer, people think you are on vacation all of the time. It's not as tough as coal mining, but it is work.
