Grog made the old-fashioned way
by Mark Stevens, Caribbean Compass I am a sailor and I love the Caribbean, so naturally I also love rum. I may not boast the expertise of my fellow sailor, writer and rum drinker David Lyman, but my rum intake over the years proves that my passion for that potent potable is unparalleled. I’m also a history buff so the chance to visit Grenada’s River Antoine Estate and Distillery is a no-brainer: sample some history, sample some rum. What’s not to like?

Book review: ‘Two Truths and a Lie’ raises the stakes in Mark Stevens trilogy
Getting your Trinity Audio player ready... When Colorado author Mark Stevens finished “No Lie Lasts Forever,” he figured he’d written a stand-alone mystery. His editor thought otherwise, and demanded a sequel. That could make some of Stevens’ fans squeamish, because they thought the serial killer known as PDQ, Harry Kugel, who terrified them in the first book, was safely locked up in Super Max. Kugel’s reappearance is pretty terrifying for reporter Flynn Martin, too.
I received a review copy from the publisher. This does not affect the contents of my review and all opinions are my own. No Lie Lasts Forever by Mark Stevens Mogsy’s Rating: 4 of 5 stars Genre: Thriller, Mystery Series: Stand Alone Publisher: Thomas & Mercer (June 1, 2025) Length: 457 pages Author Information: Website I went into No Lie Lasts Forever not entirely sure what to expect, since crime thrillers are not my usual genre and Mark Stevens is a new author to me.
The Best Crime Fiction Isn’t About Redemption. It’s About Endurance.
When I write, I don’t think in terms of redemption. That feels too calculated. It also feels too biblical and, well, my feet are firmly planted in the evolution camp. I’m right there with the quasi-amphibian tetrapods 350 million years ago, trying to figure out how to consume oxygen and make it work for all the creatures to come. Article continues after advertisement Life is too messy for a clean redemption arc.

THE FIREBALLER by Mark Stevens Read by Shea Taylor
Frank Ryder can throw a baseball well over 105 mph. But behind every pitch is an emotional weight that comes from a tragic event that happened years earlier. Ryder takes Major League Baseball by storm, but his past haunts him, and much of the league's ownership turns on him. Shea Taylor is outstanding with every voice. He excels at differentiating men's and women's voices and keeps straight Ryder's two girlfriends, a widow, his mother and brother, a team owner, and assorted players and executives.
The Fireballer: A Novel
The baseball novel has a long, even distinguished thread in fiction. Eric Rolfe Greenberg’s The Celebrant chronicled the career of Christy Mathewson, one of our first sports heroes. W.P. Kinsella’s Shoeless Joe was refashioned marvelously for the big screen, as was Bernard Malamud’s The Natural (albeit with a markedly different ending). In all of them, the story pinwheels around a larger-than-life character, one who often can whip a baseball over home plate at an ungodly speed.
The Fireballer: A Novel
“When I knocked a guy down, there was no second part to the story.” —St. Louis Cardinals and Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson Like the game of baseball, the great American pastime, there is much to love in The Fireballer by Mark Stevens. This is a well-written novel that explores the various aspects of the game.
Five Mystery Novels That Prioritize Character, Style, and Insight
See if you agree: Genre fiction guarantees a beginning, a middle, and an end. The word “genre” is a kind of shorthand for the reader: expect closure. Literary fiction? Not so much. “Literary” suggests shiny prose and real life on the page. And part of the bargain is that the ending could be inconclusive. Thought-provoking. Not always, of course, but that’s a distinct possibility.
