The Telegraph — Almost 1.5 million of the six million Missourians claim ancestry back to some part of the British Isles, and 5,000 Missourians, like me, were born in the UK. In addition, the UK is the largest foreign investor in the state, with British companies employing more than 17,000 people here.

Scottish food: can we persuade Americans to embrace it?

Scottish food: can we persuade Americans to embrace it?

Telegraph — Scottish salmon is already popular in the States (Getty) Whisky, or Scotch as it is known over here in the States, is already on solid footing, as is Scottish salmon even though many consumers don't know the fish they are enjoying is one of Scotland's biggest exports. In fact, if you combine the annual export value of Scotch and Scottish salmon you exceed $2 billion. But despite these large amounts of cash being thrust at the Scottish in order to take their whisky and fish, most Americans express disbelief that there is such a thing as world-class cuisine coming out of Scotland.

Campaign for independence raised profile of Scotland in America

Campaign for independence raised profile of Scotland in America

Telegraph — Scottish expats around the world, who could not vote in Scotland, held their breath as 3.6 million Scots headed to the polls on September 18. I was one of them. Expats stood on both sides of the argument for Scotland to be an independent country. We debated at pubs and on Facebook. The local media, looking for their local connection to the democratic drama playing out thousands of miles away, put us on the air as if we knew something they didn't. The media also went out and found some Americans who might have once watched Braveheart to see what they thought, but that usually didn't go so well.

A wee victory for proud Scots all over the world wide web

Telegraph — "The time is ripe for the worldwide family of Scots to have their own domain, reflecting an online community defined by a shared commitment to Scottish identity, culture and economic promotion," Alex Salmond, Scotland's First Minister, rightly said. More than 50 organisations, companies and individuals have been selected to represent this new global presence by becoming .scot pioneers, ahead of the general launch of the .scot domain in late September. They include the Scottish government and the two Scottish independence-related sites, Yes Scotland and Better Together. Two of those selected - the only two US-based sites given this status - are located in my adopted US hometown of St Louis, Missouri.

Standing in Washington with both feet on British soil

Standing in Washington with both feet on British soil

Telegraph — The White House, regardless of who occupies it, still brings an almost childlike wonder to the surface. The US Capitol, standing tall at the end of the Mall, is an iconic tribute to the political history of the nation and contains some great people working hard to represent the citizens who sent them there, and some others who are, shall we say, not so great. The Washington Monument, standing resolute and unmovable at the other end of the Mall is stately. And the numerous museums and the various monuments to past heroes and past presidents are a must see in DC.

Paddling 2,400 miles to help some heroes

Paddling 2,400 miles to help some heroes

Telegraph — "These are some of the fittest, most motivated 19-year-olds you'll ever see," Norman said of the soldiers the charity assists. "And just because he was wounded in a road-side bomb, doesn't stop him from being one of the fittest, most motivated people you'll ever see. The charity is all about getting these guys back to a stage where they can really live the rest of their lives." They aim to raise a total of $20,000. Day 35 of the arm-killing kayaking saw the trio pulling into St Louis, Missouri, where they were hosted in style by the generosity of the Embassy Suites St Louis - Downtown hotel, and Pi Pizza.

The Midwest honours Churchill - just as it should

The Midwest honours Churchill - just as it should

Telegraph — Few politicians in UK history are as iconic as Sir Winston Churchill. He is admired worldwide, honoured frequently, and stolen from by politicians around the world when they want to sound eloquent and educated. And here in Missouri, USA, we have our own little bit of Churchill that binds us to his legacy. The year was 1946. Winston Churchill stood in a small Midwestern college gymnasium in Fulton, Missouri, just a few miles to the west of St Louis. He was accompanied by President Harry Truman and had been driven to the speech by the grandfather of one of my co-workers.

Please America, make it easier for legal immigrants

Please America, make it easier for legal immigrants

Telegraph — I'm an immigrant. Many years ago, we packed up our house in Hampshire, England, and set sail for the colonies, braving weeks on the open sea, risking attacks by pirates and privateers, all in the hope of a new life in a distant land where the streets were paved with gold. Well, actually we took the M25 to Heathrow, got diverted to Gatwick, and flew the Pond in the hands of a friendly TWA crew. But regardless, we became immigrants in America. And, from personal experience, regardless of how welcoming and friendly the American people were, and are, the immigration system is severely broken in the USA.
