By Mark Treanor Naval Institute Press 392 pp. Reviewed by Tom Glenn June 19, 2021 A grisly, searing portrayal of how combat and its aftermath affect Marines in Vietnam. This novel is my book, writ large. I spent the better part of 13 years on the battlefields of Vietnam, much of it working with Marines. More than half of Mark Treanor’s A Quiet Cadence, which begins in 1969, is devoted to accurate and gory description of Marines in combat there.
Mark Treanor Mark Treanor, a Naval Academy graduate, was a Marine rifle platoon leader in Vietnam, an artillery battery commander, and leadership instructor and later served on the boards of the National Defense University and the Naval Academy. A lawyer, corporate executive, and leadership coach, he has participated in national security fact-finding missions in Iraq, Yemen, Africa, and the Caucasus. He lives in Maryland and Vermont.
SURVIVOR’S GUILT is a cruel legacy for veterans. Discharged servicemen seeking post-war peace of mind can’t come to grips with understanding why they lived while their buddies died. Some vets find solace in veterans’ holidays, statues and memorials. Others use unit reunions and professional counseling to soothe their souls. And unloading the burden of memories in print apparently is therapeutic; library shelves are full of ex-warriors’ autobiographies.
