Illinois: Crop Sciences Field Day, Monmouth, July 18
The Northwestern Illinois Agricultural Research and Demonstration Center near Monmouth has scheduled a field day for July 18. University of Illinois crop sciences faculty, researchers, students, and Extension specialists will address issues pertinent to the 2018 growing season. The program will begin promptly at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, July 18, and is open to the public at no cost. Weather permitting, presentations will take place outside next to research plots.
Texas Upper Coast Cotton: Check Bt Fields for Bollworms
I’ve looked at cotton past cutout (5 nodes above white flower) in all three of my counties this week, this season has been flying by. I’ve been seeing the bollworm (H. zea, corn ear worm, etc.) egg lay and some larvae. The most larvae we found this week was near Elm Grove, with 5 small caterpillars on 100 plants. I spent a good bit of time in a field trial location this week, and was finding a few live caterpillars in everything but the Viptera traited cotton.
Pennsylvania Soybeans: Tips to Double Crop After Wheat or Barley
I have seen fields planted directly after barley that did emerge almost immediately with the rains. We have ample moisture in the soil right now and it appears that some is in the forecast. It takes about 90 days for soybeans to develop pods and dry seed so if we get an average frost we need to be planting beans by July 15- August 1 at the absolute latest in PA to be in the window for harvest based on average frost free dates.
Texas: Seed Cotton Provision Workshop, Leming, July 26
The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in Atascosa, Frio and Wilson counties will present the multi-county 2018 Seed Cotton Provision Workshop on July 26. The program will be from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the AgriLife Extension office for Atascosa County, 25 E. 5th Street in Leming. The cost is $15 and lunch is included.
Pennsylvania Corn: Early-Season Fungicide - When Does it Help?
The question of the benefit of fungicide applications at a V5-V7 timing comes up a lot. It’s an attractive option because at that time the corn is short enough to be easily driven over with most equipment, and most farmers are used to applying an herbicide at this time as well. This means you do not need to deal with the hassle and expense of getting a custom applicator to make the application.
Texas Cattle: Continued Drought Could Lead to Herd Culling
Beef producers should be making plans regarding their herds in case drought conditions continue, said a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service expert. Dr. Jason Banta, AgriLife Extension beef cattle specialist, Overton, said a shortage of forage and hay could mean producers will be forced to reduce herd numbers. Having a plan to cull herds can save producers money in the short- and long-term. Banta said there was very little hay carryover from last year due to the extended winter.
South Carolina Cotton: Insect Pressure on the Rise - Scout Your Fields
Well, we have insects in cotton now, don’t we? Aphids, spider mites, plant bugs, early stink bugs, etc., are out there, especially in the earliest planted fields. Spider mites could be an issue in your early planted cotton that missed rains and looks a little droughty. I would definitely check those fields for spider mites. Reports of plant bugs continue to come in, so keep scouting for tarnished plant bug (TPB) using square retention counts and sweep nets until you get to the first week of bloom.
Alabama Bt Crops: Corn Earworms, Cotton Bollworms Building Resistance
The introduction of genetic engineering in cotton was game-changing for producers. Even more so was the introduction of insect-resistant genes in corn—especially for producers in the Midwest who deal with the corn rootworm. Now, entomologists and scientists are working to determine the best course of action as corn earworms and cotton bollworms develop resistance to the first, second and third genes in both crops.
Texas West Plains IPM: Cotton, Peanuts, Pesticide Training
I am coming around to having a more optimistic outlook for some of our area cotton production. If we receive some measurable precipitation I will remain optimistic. In fact, you may need to add to your “to do” list an application of PGR if you have not already done so. Between many now having their fertilizer in place, and irrigation water going just a bit further, cotton plants are making good progress in growth. I would hate to get behind this growth curve.
