Analog rewind
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always loved physical media. Growing up, July was tape month. My family prioritized listening to music from my dad’s collection of cassette tapes for four weeks straight. Whether we were hanging around the garage or doing our annual summer roadtrip to visit family, we’d put on a classic album or a mixtape from a forgotten era. I loved it. It felt so different from the usual playlist selection we could access on one of our iPod Shuffles anytime.

By Marley Barboeisel It’s an average Thursday in a downtown Missoula basement. The 72-year-old owner of the Dark Room, Michael Patterson, catches up on office work while simultaneously scarfing down the lunch he brought from home. Patterson, who has owned the photography supply and film development store since 2006 and worked here since 1995, said his store has become increasingly busier in recent years thanks to a rise in the popularity of film photography.

Extra, extra! Read all about it
The loud sounds of machines and yelling filled the large warehouse in Helena, where the Montana Kaimin is printed every week. About a dozen workers constantly moved around the presses. Tuesdays are busy days for the ink-covered employees. They print a handful of papers from around the state, all with different paper types and processes. The first printing press was created by German inventor Johannes Gutenberg in 1439 and the technology hasn’t changed much since.

Female rappers are notoriously underrated. Who else is out here dancing and singing the way they do? People would love to see Kendrick Lamar throw it back while spitting bars or have 21 Savage drop into the splits while rapping about drugs and money, but they just don’t do it like their female counterparts. Everyone has some female rapper energy inside of them. So, pop in some earbuds and get ready to shake it when you find out what female rapper you really are. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC.
In limbo

Uncertainty is one of the few guarantees in life. It’s human nature to doubt the paths we take, whether we change courses or not. When it comes to college, lying in limbo is as common as student loans. It can be a quiet pain for sure, and often a collective loneliness. Finding your way after graduating. Coping with the off-season. Feeling lost in your major. Stuck between social circles.

The Haunting of Brantly Hall
The University of Montana campus has long held a reputation for being a tad spooky, with stories of ghost dogs, haunted dorms and eerie tunnels beneath students’ feet. Over the last five years, the Kaimin Paranormal Investigative Team has attempted to verify those claims in some of its spookiest buildings. This Halloween, we're back with an investigation of Brantly Hall that just might be our scariest yet, complete with a trip into UM's legendary creepy tunnels.

For years, the Clark Fork River Market has flourished in the downtown area and benefited the greater Missoula community. The weekly event brings together local farmers with Missoulians in search of fresh goods, from vegetables and meats to wildflowers and kombucha.
