What was your first job as a journalist?
My first paid journalism job was at Nexstar. But my digital video journalism got me hired. I hadn't written AP style since college.

Yes
How is social media changing news?
There is less expectation for facts and a higher desire for dirty details, which pressures journalists to get clicks. The new vicious cycle.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Anyone who writes for The Onion or the New Yorker satirical pieces...so they still exist.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Telling meaningful stories. Pretty or ugly, the truth should prevail and people should gain some new insight or understanding from a story.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#thanksobama or #prisonbae - crazy work. I don't look for news to generate hashtags, but "thanks Obama" is classic O.G. Twitter gold.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Adobe products for editing, every social media platform, website CMS, phone, Canva, Nota AI, Chat GPT (sparingly), everything!

Who do you wish followed you?
I wish someone exclusive like Meghan Markle followed me, not to be friends in real life but just for the bourgeois added value.
Why did you become a journalist?
I think I've always been a journalist at heart. Recording, noting, and retelling information responsibly but relatable and entertaining.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Changes in state laws related to marijuana. It was my first story to be picked up by other publications. But I love Beyond the Headlines.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You are only a journalist in your spare time. If you are a journalist for an employer, you are a solo production house. Be prepared to create

via email anytime of day. I check email daily.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
A couple that did holiday-themed DIY projects. I love telling stories about things I can't do; it makes me feel like a kid.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
Any pitch lacking details. I decline when I don't immediately understand the story's relevance, but the opportunity to pitch again is there.
What's your favorite drink?
Right now, water as I am training for an amateur bodybuilding competition. But tequila sunrise, lemon drop, or mimosa is preferred.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
The kitchen or the bed.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
The Shade Room and TMZ are my preferred escape hatches. The Atlantic, Vox, Rolling Stone and classics WSJ, Forbes, Better Homes
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
Since I love to write feature stories, I think most people believe features are vanity or fluff, but they are the stories that connect us.
