Commentary: Charleston’s housing choices will decide who belongs
Charleston is no longer debating housing in the abstract. The pressures are visible and measurable: rising rents, longer commutes, shrinking options for working families and a steady outmigration of modest-income residents from the peninsula. As the city moves from planning to execution, the margin for error is gone. What remains are consequences. This moment calls for judgment and honesty about who bears the cost when housing decisions drift, stall or quietly change course.
Commentary: Designate land at 995 Morrison for affordable housing before it's too late
Gentrification has driven African Americans out of their neighborhoods, and there is an urgent, if not dire, need for affordable and workforce housing, yet a recent editorial on 995 Morrison Drive urged Charleston County Council to move slowly on designating the property for exactly that purpose. The Sept. 28 editorial cites two illogical reasons why council should proceed slowly. First, it cites the need for more financial information because of a county land deal that went bad 20 years ago.
Commentary: DHEC must speed up vaccination process to save SC lives
As 2020 came to a close, we finally saw a light at the end of the tunnel. The distribution of the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine brought us a bit of hope after months of uncertainty. And in the face of the highest number of cases our state has seen yet, that hope was much needed. The scientific community and doctors who tirelessly worked to develop this vaccine have given us our most valuable tool in fighting the virus.
Commentary: Legislature must act now to ensure every South Carolinian can safely vote
COVID-19 has caused many changes and challenges this year. As a society, we have worked to soften the devastation this pandemic has created and have come together in unprecedented ways to protect the health and safety of South Carolinians. One area that needs our immediate attention is our November general election process. The absentee ballot exceptions and protections for the June 9 primary elections were a positive step to ensure fair and free elections.
Kimpson: COVID-19 test results should be shared among all health care professionals
Amid this unprecedented public health crisis, we have seen South Carolinians rise to the occasion. Our essential workers have bravely continued on to ensure the rest of us get the care, support and supplies we need. Despite the uncertainty we all face, we have seen innovation, collaboration and dedication from those on the front lines as they work to battle the novel coronavirus.
Four years after the Mother Emanuel AME Church shooting, we must recommit to ending gun violence
On June 17, it will be four years to the day since a white supremacist opened fire at Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in a hate crime that killed nine Black churchgoers. As we approach the anniversary of this tragedy that rocked the Charleston community, we must take stock of what happened, and honor the memory of those who died by recommitting ourselves to the fight to end gun violence once and for all. All too often, easy access to a gun is what makes a hate crime deadly.
Gov. McMaster wrong about pension system
In a letter made public recently, Gov. Henry McMaster advocates for a 401(k)-style retirement plan as the solution to the unfunded liabilities currently facing our state pension systems.
Move forward with a bike lane on the Legare Bridge
On Tuesday, Charleston makes a choice about an integral connection between the peninsula and West Ashley. Charleston County has asked Charleston City Council to provide direction on whether to move forward with converting the extra lane on the T. Allen Legare Jr. Bridge for use by people on bike or by foot. This request comes after years of planning, including the completion of three feasibility and engineering studies and the allocation of funding.
